LAST MEETING (September 29th)

President Mark Miller spoke to the club about our Lions Club’s fundraising efforts for tornado/flood relief for Parkersburg, New Hartford, and North Cedar.  Representatives from the Parkersburg and New Hartford Lions attended as well to accept the donations and thank our club.  North Cedar School Principal, Mrs. Hartman, and a student also attended the meeting. Shortly after the May 25 tornado, Lion Cliff Mortensen contacted President Miller with the idea to organize a fundraising effort throughout the State’s Lion Clubs to raise funds for tornado victims.  President Miller contacted the Lions Club of Iowa for approval and request e-mails and photos of the disaster were sent to every club in Iowa.  The response was excellent generating donations over $37,000, mostly from clubs in Iowa, but even a few from as far away as Texas. In addition to this fundraising, our club also decided to commit profits and donations from our annual Sturgis Falls pancake breakfast to North Cedar flood relief, specifically for the playground at North Cedar School.

            Checks were presented as follows:

                        Parkersburg                $27,418

                        New Hartford               $  9,490

                        North Cedar School    $  4,000

Each of the representatives spoke briefly about what the funds would be used for, how important the donations are, and gave their appreciation. President Miller also reported that Lions Hagarty and Mortensen played an important role in the distribution of funds to victims. In addition to this local effort, it was reported that the Lions International Foundation also donated over $170,000 for flood and tornado relief in our area. The program gave us many details related to our efforts with the recurring theme that our motto “we serve” are not just words, but describe the action of our club and Lions around the world.
