Fellow Lions, we will have our Inter-Club lunch on October 6th, and Mark Farley, UNI Head Football Coach, will be our speaker.  It was decided at our last Board meeting that this would be a great opportunity for all of us to invite a friend or business associate to come and see what Lions are all about.  So mark your calendar and keep a keen eye out for some good members!

LAST MEETING (August 11th)

Don Blau and Fred Abraham spoke to the club about the Iowa Baseball League (IBL). Don is a Cedar Falls resident, having attended Cedar Falls High School and the University of Northern Iowa, where he received a degree in education. Don has served as athletic director for East High School and Principal at Hoover. The IBL is a volunteer organization in the greater Cedar Falls/Waterloo area run by parent-volunteers who wish to provide an enjoyable learning experience for young baseball players as they develop their skills in a competitive environment. Founded in 1994 by Don, the IBL was patterned after what was happening in other communities in the Midwest. Initially, there were six teams playing a 24 game schedule. Each subsequent year, the league grew to the point where there are now approximately 50 teams and 700 players. The IBL emphasizes fun, sportsmanship and competition while teaching players an appreciation for the great game of baseball. The league has three divisions defined by school grade level, not age: 3rd & 4th, 5th & 6th, and 7th & 8th. Each division has a coordinator who is responsible for scheduling and enforcing rules for that division. Fred Abraham acts as commissioner and oversees the running of the entire league. The league accepts formed teams only and does not assign players to teams. Once the team manager forms a team, the league will include that team in its playing schedule.  The season runs from early May to mid-July.  The goal of the Iowa IBL is to help young players develop baseball skills and an appreciation of the game of baseball.
