LAST MEETING (July 28th)
Police Chief Jeff Olson spoke to the Club about
the Cedar Falls Police Department and new equipment that is being used to solve
crimes. 2007 Departmental Statistics include: 29,239 Calls for Service, 1180
Adult Arrests, 209 Juvenile Arrests, 10,535 Traffic Stops and 717 Traffic
Accidents. Chief Olson shared the structure of the Police Department, which
includes officers working three shifts, broken down into various areas of
expertise. Chief Olson also provided the Club with information on various
equipment used by the Department. Each squad car is outfitted with a laptop
computer, which is hooked directly into the dispatch center. All information
relayed to the officer by voice, will also be sent to the laptop so the officer
will have it available while on assignment. They also have cameras on their
vehicles. The officers have the ability to push a button that will record the
previous 30 seconds activities to help gain evidence or details related to the
situation they are involved with. The Police Department also has in their
possession a piece of equipment called the, “Fumer”. It can be used to more
accurately and quickly show finger and hand prints on items that will fit into
the Fumer booth. This will speed the process to send the prints through the
computer system trying to identify their source. The Police Department also
uses cameras that have a lens size smaller than a dime. This will allow them to
place the cameras in discrete locations in order to better view activities that
take place. Another piece of equipment will better identify and record items
like footprints and tire marks. It is similar to mylar and it adheres to dust
particles, dirt and sand and can be used to pick the item of interest of the
floor or other flat or irregular surface. The last item that was discussed was
additional advancements in the use of
