LAST MEETING (September 8th)

Jason Weinberger, Cedar Falls/Waterloo Symphony, spoke to the club about the 2008 – 2009 season. Jason spoke of the excitement surrounding the upcoming season and featured three different areas for the Club. The public is invited to experience one of the most beloved films of all time, The Wizard of Oz, as never before. A technical marvel for the MGM studio in the late 1930’s, MGM has stunningly re-mastered this timeless classic. In the year of its 70th anniversary, the brilliantly restored film will be projected on a large screen above the stage and accompanied by your own WCFSO musicians. Hearing Judy Garland’s original 1939 studio recordings, backed by lush, live orchestration, will transport children and adults alike. ‘B’ Surprised - Two of the usual three musical B’s will make an appearance on this concert, as Austrian guest violinist Wolfgang David performs Beethoven’s monumental Violin Concerto and the WCFSO presents Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in d. Béla Bartók is the surprise here with one of his most surprising pieces, the gripping suite from The Miraculous Mandarin. Each season, the Friends of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony presents FREE Lollipop Concerts designed just for children 4-10. These concerts offer a unique chance for you to introduce your children (or grandchildren) to the wonders of classical music in an exciting, creative, and fun way. The Saturday morning events, presented at 10:00 and 11:00 a.m., are preceded by an introduction from Bubbles the Clown, who discusses basic concert etiquette and explains, in an age-appropriate manner, what to expect. As an added feature, the Symphony’s instrument petting zoo will be available between the two concerts for hands-on exploration!
