PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE (October 1st)

Today is October 1 and there are signs of the changing season all around us.  The official beginning of fall has come and gone. The Autumnal equinox, when there is equal time of daylight and darkness, was Sunday, Sept. 23. The official moment was 5:51 a.m. EDT.  Birds are already migrating, cool nights have eased the heat of summer and a record Arctic summer is already over, as the sea ice once again has begun to reform.  Rumors have it that because of the earths balance during the equinox, eggs will stand on end.

The following terms have been used throughout history for identifying the fall equinox….Alban Elfed, Autumn Equinox, Cornucopia, Feast of Avilon, Festival of Dionysus, Harvest Home, Harvest Tide, Mabon, Night of the Hunter, Second Harvest Festival, Witch’s Thanksgiving, First Day of Autumn.

Enjoy the remaining baseball season, football and tailgating weekends, costume parties and food fests lying ahead….winter is coming!

LAST MEETING (September 24th)

District Governor Roger Bublitz joined us for lunch on September 24.  Roger has only been a Lions since 1999, yet his many accomplishments are worthy of special note (including a Warren Coleman award and a Melvin Jones Fellowship).  He spoke to us about the need to constantly recharge membership, while noting that our State District is faring better than others.  He is visiting and challenging all Clubs in the District to think “outside the box” about our service traditions and to be alert for new ways of generating charitable dollars to assist Lions causes worldwide.  He concluded by relating several personal stories of a vision mission trip he took to Mexico several years ago and the profound impact that visit had on persons in dire need of sight assistance.  Roger should represent the District well during the year ahead.

DID YOU KNOW

¡ Teenagers need as much sleep as small children (about 10 hrs) while those over 65 need the least of all (about six hours). For the average adult aged 25-55, eight hours is considered optimal.

¡ Some studies suggest women need up to an hour’s extra sleep a night compared to men, and not getting it may be one reason women are much more susceptible to depression than men.

¡ Anything less than five minutes to fall asleep at night means you’re sleep deprived. The ideal is between 10 and 15 minutes, meaning you’re still tired enough to sleep deeply, but not so exhausted you feel sleepy by day.

IT'S GREAT TO BE A LION!
