PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE (October 22nd)

It’s sometimes surprising, and almost always heartwarming, to learn about all the ways Lions work to improve the world around us.  I’ve just learned of Lions Quest.  Lions Quest is a school-based life-skills program for children from kindergarten to 12th grade. More than 11 million youth have taken part in a Lions Quest classroom, and more than 350,000 educators and other adults have been trained to implement the programs in school and community settings.  Drug and alcohol prevention is a big part of this program.

Lions Clubs International has joined the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) as a sustaining member and partner. Lions Clubs International will support their mission to build stronger capacity for anti-drug efforts through 5,000 community coalitions nationwide. Working more closely at the national and international levels, Lions Clubs International and CADCA can greatly enhance the work of local communities and help youth resist alcohol and other drugs.

LAST MEETING (October 15th)

The Commission of Veteran Affairs and office was established per Chapter 35B of the Code of Iowa. The Commission was established to assist honorably discharged war-period veterans and their spouse and/or eligible dependents. Monetary relief to be given for any justifiable need deemed permissible by the Commission of Veteran Affairs. The Commission also provides the local representative/liaison to assist the Department of Veterans Affairs in assisting veterans and their spouses and/or eligible dependents filing for federal VA benefits. The staff attempts to serve 13,113 veterans plus their spouses and/or eligible dependents. Veterans/spouses/ dependents can receive relief as well as service work. Under relief, we can provide emergency monetary relief to veterans, their spouses and/or dependents. The staff provides a broad range of service work ranging from Eligibility Verification Report (EVR) forms to the more complicated disability and compensation forms. By providing service work, millions in federal benefits can be allotted to county veterans. The Commission and staff realize the keys to success are education, communication and cooperation. By communicating with county veterans and other human service agencies, coordinating information and benefits saves Black Hawk County tax dollars.
