PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE (October 8th)

Today, our Cedar Falls Club is pleased to extend a warm Hello and Welcome to fellow Lions in two metro Clubs…. the Waterloo and the Cedar Valley Evening Clubs.  It’s become an expected tradition for the Waterloo and Cedar Falls Clubs to get together several times each year.  It’s high time we expanded that tradition to also include the Cedar Valley Evening Club.  We are all brothers and sisters in service to the fine tradition and beliefs shared by Lions throughout the world.  It seems to me we should take advantage of any local opportunity to get to know one another a little bit better.  I’m very pleased that all of our guests could join us for lunch today.

I recently attended my first “Zone Meeting” during which I met representative Lions from many different Clubs in the District.  Here’s something I didn’t know….. LIONS is an acronym for what?  My guess is few of us really know.  The answer is Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nation’s Safety.”

Robert Smith spoke to the Club about UNI's Center for Urban Education (UNI-CUE). UNI-CUE was established in 1967 as
one of five components of the university's Educational Opportunity Program and special community services. The objectives were to develop educational programs to alleviate inequalities of educational opportunities in the urban environment, improve communication, and make university resources accessible to the community. The purpose of the
Educational Opportunity Center program is to identify individuals who do not have post secondary degrees to work with staff counselors and provide assistance in areas such as: admission and financial aid application completion, scholarship searches, student loan default resolution, GED program and testing centers and other referrals. In addition to the Educational Opportunity Program, UNI-CUE houses the Classic Upward Bound program, the Upward Bound Math/Science program, the Educational Talent Search program and the Gear-Up program. Further, UNI-CUE offers classroom space for university courses and meetings for community groups, and boasts a small library and computer lab. Funded by the Department of Education and sponsored by UNI, UNI-CUE Urban Area Outreach Program serves 2,000 individuals annually in a seven county area.
