PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE (November 19th)

Fellow Lions, we had our monthly Board meeting Tuesday night and we have chosen Jan. 21st as our "Member Bring A Guest To Lunch Day".  We will get a top speaker to present that day.  The most effective way to recruit new members is to have a member ask someone personally to join.  We have had good success with the member guest lunch in the past and we are looking for a good turnout for this one, so mark January 21 on your calendar!  We also have the date set for our spring pancake day and that will be on March 29th at Peet Junior High School.  This is our biggest fundraiser each year and we will need everyone to sell tickets and help out when asked.  I would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.  Hope everyone has a nice time eating too much and watching too much football!

LAST MEETING (November 12th)

Rich Powers, Cedar Falls High School Principal and Sue Gettman, Cedar Falls High School Nurse, spoke to the Club about Emergency Preparedness for the School District. The purpose of the program as to provide materials that can be used in emergency situations such as power outages, medical emergency’s, intruders, etc.

Currently, many of the school classrooms have had locks changed to protect students/faculty from intruders that may be in the school. The new locks will allow students/faculty to leave the rooms if the situation warrants. The previous deadbolt locks would not allow this to happen. Once the old deadbolts were locked, no one could enter or leave.

The district is also promoting and utilizing “emergency buckets” in classrooms and other areas where students and faculty utilize. The buckets contain some many items that can be used for a wide range or emergencies. The items include but are not limited to:

▪ Markers

▪ Cell phone numbers of emergency personnel and faculty

▪ Rubber gloves, bandages, gauze and other first aid supplies

▪ Space Blanket

▪ Water

▪ Hard candy for diabetics

▪ Duct Tape

▪ Flashlight and batteries

▪ Menstrual Pads

▪ Toilet Paper

▪ Waste Bag

▪ Bucket (used as emergency toilet)

The Cedar Falls School District is currently researching funding sources to pay to place a bucket in approved locations. It has been determined that 378 Emergency Buckets would be need to meet their goals. At $18.50 per bucket, the total cost to fund the project is $6,993.

In addition to the Emergency Buckets, the school system is looking at the possibility of funding additional defribulators and two-way radios.
