LAST MEETING (November 26th)

Sally Weatherall (along with her poodle, Max) spoke to the club about Pets in Education and Therapy, People and Animals in Life Sharing (PET PALS). Established locally in 1983, and 3rd in the nation, PET PALS is an Animal-Assisted Activity and Therapy Program whose volunteers visit local nursing homes, hospitals, group homes, schools and individuals with approved personal pets. Puppies and kittens from the Cedar Bend Human Society may also be used. PET PALS personnel are available as resources to assist organizations or individuals in setting up similar projects. The Cedar Valley has 40 active members. Following training, members are assigned to a team that visits a facility on a regular basis. PET PALS volunteers give over 3,000 hours of their time annually. Members value the work they do. Elderly persons in nursing homes, who have not spoken for several years, will talk to the animals. Children with low self esteem and self doubts grow through the safe, accepting friendship of a dog, then move on to seek human companionship. If you would like more information about PET PALS, please contact them by calling (319) 232-6887.

CHRISTMAS SEASON TRIVIA

▪ A Christmas club, a savings account in which a person deposits a fixed amount of money regularly to be used at Christmas for shopping, came about around 1905.

▪ Before settling on the name of Tiny Tim for his character in "A Christmas Carol," three other alliterative names were considered by Charles Dickens. They were Little Larry, Puny Pete, and Small Sam.
