LAST MEETING (April 21st)

Carson Landsgard, General Manager of the Target Distribution Center on the SW corner of Viking and Hudson Road spoke to the Club. Target is known as an upscale discounter. Step into any Target store in any city in the country, and you know exactly what to expect: high-quality, stylishly designed items plus all the essentials for your life, displayed in a clean, organized and welcoming environment. The one-of-a-kind experience comes from our department store roots and ongoing commitment to great prices and stylish innovations; the one-of-a-kind feeling is why millions of guests visit every year. Target is the 2nd largest retailer in the USA with 1600 stores nationwide. Their stores carry products from all over the world with revenues close to six billion dollars annually. Their average customer is female (90%), and 41 years of age.

The Cedar Falls distribution facility is five years old and is located on a 140-acre parcel. The building is contains 1.4 million square feet (30 acres) with a 1090 parking stalls for trailer trucks and 600+ parking stalls for employees. It is 1.25 miles if you walk around the perimeter of the building and has 7.1 a conveyor system. 600 employees work four shifts seven days a week. The Cedar Falls facility is a just-in-time distribution center where most of their product that is delivered to the store leaves in the same day. The area covered by the Cedar Falls center includes Northern Missouri, Eastern Nebraska, Southern Minnesota and Western Illinois.

Target has been involved in food sales for about 15 years. Previously they purchased from wholesalers but have recently begun distributing from their own warehouses. Food production and distribution is now a corporate strategy due to the increase in store traffic.  Distribution for the food products is different than the retail center because quantities delivered is smaller, meaning a larger number of stores will be served. For example, the new Cedar Falls food distribution center will deliver as far south as Oklahoma. There will be 150 people employed in the new food distribution center, which will open in August 2009.

Target is also a community advocate and is involved in numerous charities such as the local Food Bank and National Night Out events.
