PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE (August 27th)

What happened to summer?  If the Lions Club Picnic has come and gone and the kids are back in school, fall can’t be far away.  You’ll soon be hearing your President, the Tail Twister and your Membership Chair talking about the need to reach out and increase membership.  Please be thinking of individuals (and local businesses that should be supporting LIONS) that should be invited to attend and join.  Then, take action!

Speaking of membership….. July marked the 20th anniversary of Women Lions.  Although always present as lionesses and in other supporting roles, women were officially invited to become Lions in 1987.  Two decades later, women are the fastest growing group of Lions, making up almost 20% of all members and taking on numerous leadership roles, including 30.5% of council chairpersons.  Congratulations ladies!

LAST MEETING (August 13th)

Carey Darrah, Manager of the Cedar Valley TechWorks described for the Club the project and it’s evolution. The Cedar Valley TechWorks project has been developed to create a bioproduct cluster as a part of the comprehensive revitalization and reinvestment program for the Waterloo-Cedar Falls, Iowa, region. Located within the world’s most productive farmland region and close to leading research institutions, the Cedar Valley is well-positioned to develop this economic cluster. The development of a central campus, connecting producers, manufacturers, students and consumers, will supply additional jobs to the region and foster the development of new biotechnology businesses. This bioproduct cluster, in which collaboration within the industry can occur, will not only advance the biotechnology field, but also enhance the economic vitality of the Cedar Valley and the state of Iowa.

Cedar Valley TechWorks is sponsored by the Waterloo Development Corporation, a private, not-for-profit organization dedicated to economic development activities within the Cedar Falls-Waterloo region. The corporation is committed to increasing employment, enhancing the tax base, and making visual and aesthetic improvements via cooperation of the private sector and all levels of government. The TechWorks facility will be located in downtown Waterloo, in buildings donated to the Waterloo Development Corporation by Deere & Company.
