THE LIONS ROAR
REINCARNATED
Edited by Mark Ripplinger
From time to time Club members hear me reminding officers to
attend monthly Board Meetings. It dawns
on me that there might be some curiosity among others about what happens at
such meetings. For those of you that are
dying to know (and even those that aren’t), let me give you a glimpse of a
typical meeting. We meet once a month on
the second Tuesday. During our meeting
of September 11, we took action and/or considered the following issues:
Arrangements
for upcoming Inter-Club meeting on October 8th
Attendance
at quarterly Zone meetings
Correspondence
from
Recap of
annual scholarship winners / awards
Youth
camping funding request
Leader Dog
funding request
Cedar
Falls Public Art Committee funding request
Correspondence
from
Requests
(2) for vision-impaired individuals and financial assistance
I’m pleased to report that the Club is in sound financial health and that our Membership Chair is beginning to plan another major push to recruit new members.

Sherri Greenwood, Covenant-Sartori Hospital Administrator,
provided the board with an overview of recent improvements to their health care
system. Since 2002, the following services and units have been established:
2002 - Senior Behavioral Unit, 2003 - Surgical Weight Loss Unit, 2004 - Midwest
Institute of Advance Laparoscopic Surgery, 2005 & 2006 - Orthopedic
Vascular Surgery, 2007 - Arrowhead Medical and Emergency Services building.
Currently, the hospital and Arrowhead employs 387 people.
Challenges for the hospital include encouraging the state
legislature to increase Medicaid funding to take advantage of the 2 for 1 match
from the federal government. This is vital because currently Covenant-Sartori
only receives 80 cents for every dollar of Medicaid service provided and 88
cents for every dollar of Medicare service provided. Currently, 50% of their
revenue is from Medicare and Medicaid patients. Covenant Sartori also provides
charity care for individuals who do not have health insurance at all and are in
the appropriate low-income class level.
