PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE (September 24th)

The following events occurred on September 24. In 1975, the world's highest mountain, Mount Everest is successfully scaled for the first time via its southwest face by British climbers.  In 1960, the world's first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Enterprise, was launched at Newport, Virginia.  In 1948, the Honda Motor Company was founded.  In 1789, the United States Supreme Court, the position of Attorney General, and the United States Post Office Department were established.

History isn’t just about the past.  It happens each and every day throughout the world, and Lions are a part of our local and global history.  Here in Cedar Falls, this Club has contributed to a host of local projects that have brought great meaning and significance to the lives of others, i.e., the UNI Dome, Strayer-Wood Theatre, the Cedar Falls Recreation Center, the Oster Regent Theatre, youth baseball and basketball leagues, and the new Library….not to mention monies raised for the Lions Foundation and for assisting local individuals with eyeglasses and hearing aids.  This Club has enriched the lives of others, and you are all part of that history.

We Serve ……… John Page

LAST MEETING (September 17th)

Shane Shellhorn and Aaron McCoy provided the members with an overview of the Drive Safe Cedar Valley initiative. The program is a partnership with Waterloo Traffic Operations, the IDOT and INRCOG and is funded with a $50,000 grant from the IDOT. Public awareness efforts will utilize education-based programs and special events to familiarize the public with traffic safety basics and the locations in the metro area where the most accidents occur. The Cedar Falls/Waterloo metro area has higher vehicle/pedestrian accidents than all other areas in the State. In Waterloo alone, 24 intersections are among the top-ranked in the state for incidents that cause property damage, injuries and fatalities. DID YOU KNOW

¡ To drop off we must cool off; body temperature and the brain’s sleep-wake cycle are closely linked. That’s why hot summer nights can cause a restless sleep. The blood flow mechanism that transfers core body heat to the skin works best between 18 and 30 degrees. But later in life, the comfort zone shrinks to between 23 and 25 degrees - one reason why older people have more sleep disorders.

IT'S GREAT TO BE A LION!
