Business ethics forum of managementlogs.com
http://www.managementlogs.com/business_ethics.html
Deals with ethics in the business world today the changes coming about because of corrupt practices that have recently been uncovered. I have posted to the forum 23 times over the past month; discussing topics such as the increased adoption of formal statements by companies to there employees on the definitions of ethics and what each of there companies values are. This is a growing part of our business world today and ethics and values are being sought after by all business professionals as hiring is taking place. We also discussed such topics as how public trust can and must be regained in light of current corruption in major corporations such as Enron. If the public doesn’t trust its corporations then the corporations will no longer exist; causing major unemployment such as in the instance of Enron. The networking possibilities can be found as being very pronounced. Subscribers to this sight will find a vast amount of forums that can be joined allowing the subscriber to stay active in the sight. The sight asks the subscriber to change it’s password every 14 days so to keep the forum active and also sends emails as to new topics to discuss. There are links to different contributors sights
and as I said before to other business forums. This forum will help any subscriber after he/she has gradated by keeping them updated as far as current legislation or topics of interest. Visit the sight for yourself.

Young Entrepreneurs
http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/youngentrepreneurs3/.
The group was designed to be a forum to discuss and exchange ideas for young entrepreneurs. The group average roughly 3,200 posts per month over the time that I subscribed.  Most if not all of the posts were junk mail advertisements.  I also, in turn, received around 100 to 150 junk emails every day to my inbox. This group has absolutely zero networking potential in terms of subscribers, topics, or links to other resources or as a post-graduation networking opportunity. After this experience, I would be hard pressed to ever recommend a Yahoo! Group for any purpose.

Unit of 1
www.unitof1.com.
I
nit of 1 is a website for entrepreneur's and business people. It has a variety of information available about how to start up a business and how to be a successful business owner. During the four weeks, I placed five messages on the Unit of 1 discussion forum and received very little feedback. I found the website to be disappointing because every message must be approved by the headmaster before it can be placed on the website for others to
see. Therefore it took a long time to receive feedback. Many of the messages from other business people were over my head and they seemed to have already built a relationship with eachother, which I found difficult to be a part of. I would not recommend this website to college students because it seems like a website for older, already established business people.

Career Topics
http://www.thevault.com/community/mb/industries.jsp
The website
offered many different discussion panels including panels that discussed specific companies, panels that discussed education and gave educational advice, and panels that discussed career topic and gave you job advice. I choose to be a part of the career topic message board. I had a particular interest in this board as I am a senior this year and was trying to find jobs that would interest me, or at least find information on topics that were relevant to the career path that I will eventually be taking. The message board did do a good job. It gave tips on career advice, how to write proper resumees, how to perform proper interviews, when to accept job offers, when to look for different jobs and many other topics. The only downside about the board was that in some cases well I guess I should say in most cases you had to be a member subscribed to read most of the postings, which costs $3.95 per month. So I guess that I wouldn't really reccomend this website to anyone because there are many other websites which I'm sure offer the same kind of advice for no charge at all.

b2 Business Forum.
I found this forum through a search engine. This forum intregreed me because it offered forums for multiple different businesses. For example, they talked about wholesale, retail, and home-based businesses.  They also had forums that specialized in the different types of advertising. During the past month, I have placed a few messages and also have read other peoples messages. I felt this site probably wouldn't be helpful for a lot of college students because it focuses more on businesses already started. However, it would be a great forum for a student who was looking to start his own business.

The Business Forum
 www.thebusinessforum.net
This website is still young; however as more and more people register, The Business Forum will prove as a useful resource to anybody who has general business questions.  By joining this forum, I had the opportunity to engage in conversation on many topics, including advertising and marketing,  joint ventures, capital, and financing, stocks/ bonds, real estate, online business, personal finance, sales.   The only problem that I had with this forum was that there are no proven professionals that post on this forum.  This website is a great place to throw out ideas on many different subjects, but from what I found, any responses people receive are from other individuals who are not necessarily any more knowledgeable than the person that initially posted.  As this website grows and becomes more popular, I would like to see them adding professional advice in an effort to improve the website.   Overall, I would recommend anybody who is interested in business in general to register on The Business Forum.  Personally, as I graduate and move on into “the real world”, I plan on remaining registered with this website.  As people discuss their ideas on subjects, there is plenty of networking potential and many business contacts can be made.

Marketplace2
http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/marketplace2/.
There are 479 members and 60 new members since I joined.  There have been 365 posts during the month of April and is increase from the month of March.  This site asks everyone to feel free to share their thoughts on business finance and the global economy.I believe this site is meant to speak to the post-graduate community of business workers looking to get involved in networking with various small business owners.  It also has a lot of posts about stock options and investments options.  More topics for this forum were things like advancing technology, new products, and idea's for e-commerce and Internet use.  For example, a post with a subject matter called WorldWealthSystem promotes this web based business called worldwealthsystems.com.  It's Internet based company is suppose to be a profit-making machine and it offers you to join as an associate for this group for free.  This forum is really meant for people looking to start working in a small business setting.  However, it does have influence on college level students and post-graduates because of its diversity in topics.  If students need a better understanding of good investment ideas and stock options, plus some knowledge of small business ideas, then I would suggest that they join this forum.  In addition, each post has many links to networking opportunities for that message topic specifically.  It was interesting to see all the different ways of promoting a business, stocks, and finance in general and I think I had a good experience in this forum.

Small Business Forum
http://www.smallbusinessforums.org/index.php.
This site is relatively small having only 3049 registered users.  While I was registered at this site there were about 100 new members joined and roughly 300 posts.  This site mostly offers advice for people with small businesses, but also has many discussions for all types of businesses.   This site is geared to post-graduates who plan on starting their own business someday.  There is a discussion forum about some legal issues that you may come across when starting a small business.  Also there are tips about marketing and financing.  There are links on this site so that people can stay up-to-date on all of the new business news that is occurring.  There are a lot of networking opportunities for people who are just starting their own business, but not a lot for college students.  I would recommend this site to anybody thinking about starting their own business after college because there are many helpful tips on this site.
Luke Delagardelle, Spring 2006
Small Business Forum
http://www.small-business-forum.com.
This website had different areas with sub-areas of discussion including Small Business Discussion Forum, Finance, Creating a Business, Employment,     Legal and Regulatory Issues, Marketing & Advertising, Marketing on the Internet, Advertising on the Internet, Small Business Set Up ( How to Prepare a Business Plan, How to Create an Idea for a Home Based Business, How to Begin a Small Business, How to Locate Venture Capital), Open Forum Discussion.  As for potential networking opportunities, several of the subscribers currently have a home based business. Others are looking into setting
up a home based business asking for guidance. I engaged in a few discussions on the importance of a college education in today’s business world and what companies are looking for in a potential hire.  Another area of discussion was on what type of franchise to invest in. This website offers insight to graduating students who are seeking to set up a business of their own. It would assist in how to select the type of business and what to anticipate with setting up an individual’s own business. There were additional links to other discussion forums for other areas in finance and government regulations.
I would recommend the site who is interested in the forming a small business, either home based or store front. It provides insight from existing small business owners who are willing to answer questions with getting started.
Annette Ulrich, Spring 2006

I participated on the electronic message board found at
http://www.smallbusinessforum.org This site has 3049 registered members.   This site is growing fast.  While participating, over 100 people registered and there was many posts everyday.  I thought this site was full of good information.  It offered ideas on how to manage a wide variety of small businesses. There were alot of college studends that recently have graduated on this site looking for advice on their future business plans.  Networking is great when starting a business and with this message board there were a lot of networking opportunities.  I would recommand this site for any college student who might be interested in starting a business because there are many helpful tips.

http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/Work_From_Home_Business/
For my electronic discussion I decided to look for a forum that would allow me to begin to dive into the field of entrepreneurship. This group was very easy to join.  Since it is a yahoo group you are required to have a yahoo account, but that is free, as is joining the forum.  The group just asks you a few questions regarding your email preferences and format.  After that you are ready to begin posting. There is definitely a lot of activity on the forum.  They always keep a count of the number of messages posted in the last 7 days.  As of right now there has been 4529 messages posted in the last 7 days.  That is something that drew me to this group.  However, I have come to realize that the reason for the huge number of posts is because a large portion of them are posted by companies trying to get you to apply for jobs, sell you products, or talk you into their scheme.  For people looking for that type of information this group would be great. I made a few posts and did not really receive any replies.  There are definitely more people like me on the forum but they are just not numerous enough, or can not sift through all the "junk mail" to find my posts.  Unfortunately, this has caused me to feel that this group has not been useful to me and would not be useful to future students either.  I had hoped to be able to have discussions with people who had started their own web or home based business.  However, all I received was people trying to sell me on their ideas.  So, I would not recommend this group to students that wish to actually learn something, but if you want to try to find a "pyramid scheme", this would be perfect for you.

This listserv sent me a daily news brief about things that happened during the day.  I will receive information on this topic from many different sources daily. It would be useful to people that needed information about what happened on a daily basis. The list is one in which information provided is useful for people at all levels.

Network of Enterprising Women
www.topica.com
The purpose for this discussion group is empowerment through business exchange, business opportunities, and personal stories shared.  This is not a good site for students because I think most of the members are looking to make money too easily without too many success stories.  People who are looking for future business ventures outside of their jobs, especially women might find this site useful.

This discussion group would be great for all business and communication majors, and any other major.  The topics discussed would benefit these majors in the workplace and they would also gather some ideas on what real business professionals are discussing in their organization

Business History
H-Business (www.h-net.org/lists)
H-Business is the discussion network for the Business History Conference, and international organization devoted to the study of business enterprise and organization and of all aspects of the interatctions of business with society, government, and culture in a historical context.  Subscribers to H-Business exchange inquiries about their research, share news or archival holdings, post notices and programs of meetings, discuss issues relevant to the study of business history, and participate in H-Net Reviews.  Many of the people who participate in the discussions are mostly affiliated with universities and colleges.  This list is run through Michigan State University.  I didn't get much use out of this list, and I don't think many others would unless they are interested in researching or teaching business history.  I had hoped that the list would deal more with history of business practices and theories that could be applied as what to do and what not to do in  the real world.  I also thought that I might be able to get some career advice about what business sectors to persue after graduation.  Most of the discussion dealt with book reviews, grants, and exhibits. --Cory Troyna

World News Summary

onelist.com

WorldNewsSummary is a news group that sends out an e-mail once a week with brief summaries of what is going on in the world.  This group was very helpful for me, as I could get caught up on all of the world news in one e-mail. I would recommend this list to anyone who wants to find out what is going on  in the world without receiving lots of e-mail every day.  It also provides   information on a variety of world subjects so the member can see quickly what is going on.

ukbusinessforums.co.uk
I was attracted to this site because of the large number of daily posts, which meant I would not be the only person  posting on there. I have posted 23 times so far and there have been replies to each of my posts. There are a number of topics such as Internet marketing, Advertising and PR, fields that interest me greatly.  Concerning my thoughts about the quality of the forum, I believe it  offers some interesting topics to discuss with others in major fields.  It is not a site for networking, and most of the time there was no way  of knowing whether the people posting were professionals. It is an
interesting site for informational purposes, but not for networking or finding a job. The biggest negative point was the number of posts that appeared
genuine but actually turned out to be spam (requests for business services). This is common for online forums that do not control who becomes a member. It is a site worth visiting, and gives an international perspective while still being in English.

www.viaduc.com
...a platform of business connection.  The principle is old like the world:  to be on contact with a third party succeeds when we are recommended or that we have a common relationship.  In 20 months, 350.000 members joined Viaduct which increases of 2000 new members per day.  Viaduct is the ideal tool to communicate, to recruit, to advertise, and to find customers or to change suppliers.I participate at different forum with other students from others
Business School in France. We shared our experiences in different firms, and especially I took addresses for applying to an internship. My feeling is that this website is really useful, if you are looking for an internship or future jobs. You can find different business subjects, and moreover you can join different Business Associations and Professional forums.  The negative point is that, the website is in French, so unless you are able to understand the language, you will maybe not interesting in my different discussion groups.

Accounting

CPAnet discussion forum
www.cpanet.com
As a junior accounting student, I am starting to do research on the CPA exam and finding a job after graduation.  I found a forum called "CPAnet: the place to start..." which has many different forums to choose from.  I chose a discussion called Accounting & Audit which includes posts by students, recent grads, and potential employers.  Since March 17th, there have been 24 posts and 47 replies. To join the discussion, all you have to do is agree to a short contract and provide a few pieces of information to register.  The students that write to the discussion board ask questions about the CPA exam: how to study for it, requests for help, or tips to pass it the second (or third) time around.  Recent grads requested information about working for certain companies or when they should take the exam.  There are small opportunities for networking with this forum because a few potential employers posted descriptions of open positions. Other than that, it seems that the networking possibilities would be limited because most of the participants are students. All of this information is relevant to UNI accounting students, but mostly to senior and grad students.  I would recommend this forum for students looking for information and support while studying for the exam.  However, as far as post-graduation networking, it leaves much to be desired.
Angela Abruzzese, Spring 2006

Coming to the end of my college career and beginning to look forward
to my professional career, I chose CPAnet.com.  Here I found multiple forums for professionals and students.  I followed the discussion forum regarding the CPA exam.  I followed the forum for students who are looking to take the exam in the near future.  You are allowed to view the posts but unable to post if not registered.  To join a discussion and be able to post you must sign
up.  The sign up is similar to every other internet group or discussion you would join.  There is a minor contract you must agree to but after registering, you are free to post.  Other than a forum for discussion, there are multiple utilities for students and professionals at this website.  This is an excellent source of information for an accounting student to use.  The discussion boards are very active.  There are several posts with replies on the same day.  If a student were to have a question regarding the CPA, they could check back later that week and have multiple replies to their posts.  I would recommend accounting students going into their senior year to join and research the website’s resources.
Jason Schmidt, Spring 2006

I will be graduating with my Masters of Accounting in the near future and therefore decided to join the CPAnet discussion group.  I focused on the information regarding the CPA that contained questions from members preparing to take the exam and answers from members who had recently finished the exam. There were also interesting discussions about working in the accounting field.   This discussion group had a lot of information regarding the best books to purchase to study for the CPA exam as well as information  regarding working while preparing.  I found the discussions regarding
the benefits of public and private accounting to be very helpful.   Those members currently working in public accounting, especially with the big four firms, were very straight forward about the hours that are required during the busy season.  Overall the information was very helpful and I received some valuable information regarding study tools for the CPA exam.  This discussion group was extremely easy to join.  The forum allowed you to view other members posts without joining, but if you wanted to post then  you had to register for the group.  The registration only  took about 3 minutes and was well worth the time.  This is a discussion group that I will continue to utilize as I complete my degree and prepare for the CPA exam.
 Kara Olswold, Spring 2006

There were mainly questions and information about the CPA exam or have questions only an accountant would know the answer to.  This discussion group helps accountants interact in an online community find resourceful websites tailored to their needs, utilize the internet to gain new business, improve the quality of client serice and conduct efficient and effective research.  With the large amount of students in the accounting program at UNI, and the emphasis UNI puts on passing the CPA, this would be a great tool for students.  Professionals would find this site useful as well.  I really think that trying two different lists at the same time is a good strategy.  I figured out the accounting.com is a better site due to the time it took to get a  response back  for questions asked.  Both websites provide a variety of opportunities for accounting majors.

In the course of a typical month, there were about 200
posts to this listserv. This board is useful for student in accounting major and workers in accounting fields. If you are an accounting major student, I would recommend subscribing to this. This website sends you daily emails to inform you the questions accounting people meet during the daily business work. Some of the broad topics that are illustrated here: Questions and problems in daily work, Interest Rate, Economic events , Labor rights, Job opportunities, Business Law . This group gives students a chance to read opinions of the real accounting world. These posts also give you a better idea of what things will be like in the workplace. What’s more, the listserv lets students apply concepts they have learned in class to real life current events. In the listserv, there are job postings nationwide that would help students who will graduate soon. I will continue to be subscribed to this listserv. You will feel interesting when you read the information in this listserv.

...a typical forum website where people can post a question or announcement and others can respond on the same thread or create their own.  However, I don't think it's worth your time. In the month that I was a member, there were no posts. From the previous threads I read, I gathered that most, if not all members are Accounting students, which means this is certainly not a good networking opportunity. However, there was an administrator (Chris) who would answer questions that kids had on homework questions, such as how to do a Statement of Cash Flows, and his knowledge could be helpful.

This group contains over 1000 members and had over 90 new messages posted during the past month.    This group has some strengths and weaknesses.  The homepage of the  web site contains many different links to various accounting websites  and it also contains several power point presentations of various accounting issues.  There is also a mass e-mail each day to the members of the group.  These e-emails contain things such as member posts, job applications, and general business tips.   This group has the potential to be helpful to many accounting students.  The various links and power point presentations could be helpful to students.  The e-mails contain some good information but it can take awhile to sort through the rest of the stuff that is of no particular use.  In the end, I think it is worth it to belong to this group.

The purpose of the listserv is to provide a forum to ask questions and to respond with answers relating to “all aspects of accounting for the nonprofit/ngo organization”.  It is open to any person interested in the subject.  A typical conversation would involve an accountant at a nonprofit organization asking a question and requesting suggestions or advice.  There was not a lot of use of the listserv while I lurked, I would approximate one question per week. I think this listserv could be very beneficial to students who are interested in nonprofit organizations.  All of the questions posed while I lurked seemed to be very good questions that related to topics the professionals were actually encountering.  However, there was not a lot of activity on the listserv.   Approximately one email per week was sent.

American Bar Association Tax Law & Practice Discussion (ABA-TAX)
http://abanet.org/archives/
aba-tax.html

ABA-TAX is a tax law discussion including non-tax issues in the context of tax practice and tax issues in the context of other areas of practice. This discussion group also helps tax students and tax professionals communicate with each other and enable them to ask and answer questions posed by their peers. This list is useful for an accounting student because you are able to learn about recent tax adjustments and able to learn how they appply to different people. This would be extremely useful for a tax professional because some of the topics were technical.  If you are a tax student or do taxes in your own free time, it is useful because if you have a question, you can get an answer from someone who does this type of work.  This is a good site to go to for your questions when doing your own taxes or are dealing with at them moment for April 15.  This is useful for tax planning since everyone pays taxes.  It is also useful for any student who plans on dealing with tax law or tax preparation

Accounting.com

The website is a rich source of information.  It provides a plethora of information in all areas of accounting and especially in areas of interest to students who will become accountants.  I understand this site isn’t an official List-serv, but it does fulfill the same basic functions of a list-serv by allowing everyone to see what questions and answers are posted.  One of the benefits it does have, is that one doesn’t have to be registered in order to view the postings. This listserv is a highly recommended website for accounting majors.

accountantsworld.com

/forums

From what I could tell, many of the posts are from both accounting students and accounting professionals looking to find out more information, get other professionals' opinions, advice, and viewpoints, and discuss issues regarding different areas of accounting.I would definitely recommend this discussion group at <www.accountantsworld.com/forums> to all accounting majors, as it consists of many different subject groups pertaining to almost all areas of accounting.  This website includes several group discussions including accounting software, accounting and auditing, consultants and VARs, financial planning, fixed assets, payroll/human resources, practice mgmt. & development, profit from the internet, and taxation.

Accounting-Net

http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/Accounting-Net
Registering for  the group is simple and free. All a person needs is a Yahoo! email  address and fill out of a form about their preferences.  This group brings together a whole wide range of accountants from students to CPA and the information they have to share.   I didn't find the group particularly helpful. I wouldn't recommend joining this group. Most of the postings were advertisements for conferences or things that didn't apply to the accounting world. Some were also in different languages and for training sessions in India. It really didn't give much incite on the accounting world here. There were a few job postings that I found to be interesting. It gave me an idea of what is out in the real world and how much experience it takes
to get to those position.

Jennifer Dolph, Spring 2006

This discussion group is for individuals with accounting backgroung or interested about the world of accounting, it doesn't matter which stage of your career you are going through.  It doesn't matter what career you are in.  Many prospective employers participate in the discussions and sometimes are looking for entry-level employees.

This discussion group is is benefical to anyone not just students.  It provides interaction and sharing information related to the world of accounting.  For students, who would like to get wisdom, guidance, opinions, or advice for school then this would be benefical to them.  They can also share experienc in study and job hunting.  People can also post job openings or comments.

In the course of the month, there were about 50 posts to this listserv.    The topics posted included job descriptions, college events, opinions on the NEA Journal articles (ex. Immigration, Poverty and Organized Labor), opinions on current economic events.   I would recommend this listserv to students who are economic majors or minors.  It gives students a chance to read opinions of professional economists.  The listserv also lets students apply concepts they have learned in class to real life current events.  Since professional economists are subscribed to this listserv, it serves as a networking tool for students.  There are job postings on this listserv which would help students after they graduate.  I have only been subscribed for a month and there were 6 job postings.  I will continue to be subscribed to this listserv.  For the month I have been subscribed, I found the topics posted interesting.

Motley Fool investment watch newsletter
www. fool.com
I found the discussions here to be very interesting mainly because I am looking to get into investing myself.  There were many different topics covered throughout the time I was participating.  The discussions were very valuable and I learned a lot from many of the different responses. There were many different investing questions covered and I felt they were all very valuable.  It was very easy to sign up for and I strongly believe everyone should learn more about money and how you can benefit from using your money correctly.  I do believe this discussion forum would be beneficial to help out newly
graduated students to all get together and discuss options about their fiancial life, whether it is questions about what stocks you think are going to rise, or what type of real estate investments suite your needs the most.  The topics covered are endless and there is no reason to not learn how to invest your money appropriately.  If we as young students use are money correctly we can all hope to live a happy and financially free life. I will stay on as participant on this discussion forum and I hope to see many of you join as well.
Michael Bryant, Spring 2006

I am a management major, but this site has an array of areas covered.  I made 2 posts concerning index funds and mutual funds because it is important to start investing for retirement ASAP.  Besides the always full message boards I got weekly emails concerning things like stock trends and how to organize a college graduate's finances.  I think this site would be beneficial to UNI students because we are  all going to have to start investing to supplement our retirement  income and this site gives everyone information on all stocks and what  the market is doing.  Plus it helps students organize their finances  so that they aren't living paycheck to paycheck right out of college.  Subscribing to fool.com website was very beneficial to me because it
opened my eyes wider to what the economy is doing in the United States and in other countries.

This newsletter provides brief descriptions and links to current articles available at the Motley Fool website.

It gives lots of information dealing with financial things such as:  financial news stories, stock quotes, how to start investing, information on taxes, IRA’s, mortgages and lots more information.
I would recommend this group to any student interested in the financial information.

Iowa Association of School Business Officials (IASBO)
www.iowa-asbo.org
This is an organization of school business officials including business managers and superintendents throughout the state.  These individuals are
responsible for the financial operations of school districts in Iowa. IASBO offers many valuable services to its members including training,
certification, and leadership development.  These services arecommunicated to members via newsletters and a well maintained
association website.  The website includes a member forum which allows IASBO members to conduct discussions with other members in similar positions and with IASBO officers.  I have been a member of IASBO since joining the Independence Community School District as the business manager in October 2005.  The IASBO forum has been a valuable tool for me in the ability to seek guidance from more experienced school business managers throughout the state with
a simple posting rather than placing multiple phone calls.  Topics of interest to business managers that are posted in the forum include insurance issues, human resources and payroll, budgeting and compliance, tax levies, bonding and other financing alternatives, and many others.  The wealth of information available through the IASBO member forums is valuable in itself, but the networking opportunities it allows for members is equally as important.  Building good relationships with other business managers and superintendents helps facilitate cooperation and joint efforts among school districts and opens up future career opportunities to those who participate.

mutual-funds
@onelist.com

The group talked about how education costs are on the rise and mutual funds are getting more heavily involved in the college savings scene.  I would suggest this site to UNI students to make them start thinking abut investing early for the future.  This group does not overload your mailbox with messages.  The group talks about very important investment strategies that would be useful to many people.

investors-digest @shore.net

I found this listserv is very informative for the business professional who wants to stay current on a variety of business topics, but does not have the time to read every business publication. This listserv also does a good job of giving you the important information you need in a compressed and manageable form.

yahoogroups.com
A monthly newsletter offering timely feature articles on building a strong and profitable business in the 21st century.  It Gives tips, resources, surveys, and more.  A quick, easy read designed to help your business get "fit" and your bottom line get "fat".
This discussion group is not useful to a UNI student, but would be a good site for management.

teachers.net chat
This is a very good resource for student and for teachers. I am in my level 2 field experience so this was a good place for me to ask questions with some anonymity. The discussions could be about anything. There were even different discussion groups you could join if you wanted to concentrate on subject content or even location. When I become a teacher I will definitely be joining more of these. This is a good way for teachers to gain more experience in instructional strategies and classroom ideas. By joining one of these you can create a huge networking community. Not only is the discussions a good resource but the individuals are also a great resource they can introduce you to other resources.
Erin Hoffman, Spring 2006
The month of March I attended the teachers.net forum.  I posted about 15 times over the month.  The discussions ranged from success stories and ideas on how to teach material to high school students.  I felt this was a very valuable tool in extending my knowledge on content as well as identifying potential problems I may face as a future educator. I received many tips from other educators on where to find resources. This was a great opportunity and will hopefully be able to continue to it as I go forward with my career in teaching.
Stacy Ascher, Spring 2006

Teachers.net high school
www.teachers.net/mailrings

I have visited teachers.net for the past two months for the Electronic Networking assignment. As a business teaching student, I found this site to be quite valuable. I contributed at least once a week to a discussion board, posting a total of 10 times over the two months.  The discussion forums vary and are categorized by subject, grade, and state, among others groupings. As a student learning about curriculum development and classroom management, I found this to be a very accessible site and a place to ask questions. The chatboard is designed to develop support and spread ideas about education, and to that end it is a very useful resource.   The site also includes links to job searches, sample lesson plans, and to administrators.net for school administration personnel. This is a site that I would recommend to other business teaching students, and a tool I will continue to utilize when I receive my first teaching position.
Brent Henry, Spring 2006

This particular mailing list has very been very beneficial to me as a future high school business teacher. There was an incredible amount of goodwill and help in this mailing list.  Subscribers to this mailing list are very helpful and offer a lot of useful advice.  I would highly recommend this mailing list to any individual considering a career in high school education. I think this site is very useful for UNI students who are majoring in education because this  gives them a good outlook of what their future jobs will be like. It also gives them some lesson plans to look at to prepare them.

The purpose of this discussion group was to join a network of over 50,000 of the world's brightest educators, connected through the magic of email.  Teachers. net utilize the internet to harness the collective intellect and wisdom of the worldwide teaching community.  Participants are educators and any level and subject matter.  With the UNI tradition in education this mailing gives students a real-life perspective in the teaching profession.  This mailing is a way of interacting with existing educators, and exploring the different teaching ideas.                                                                             --Andy McQuillen

I plan to continue with this listserv while I student teach and when I have my own classroom.                                                                         --Stacy Roberts

This list pertains to people in the business teaching profession.  This is mostly used by high school business educators and future business teachers.
This list is very useful for teachers in the business field.  I am a business teaching major and this listserv has broadened my range of thinking.  I would highly recommend this listerv for anyone who is in the business teaching field or interested in this profession.

The information mostly dealt with a wide spectrum of educational topics.  This list server was a useful tool to people in or who are going to be in the educational field.

kesten.meena.cc.uregina.ca

The list is composed of educators of business.  They discuss various topics of business in the real world and in the classroom.  Topics range from small business to corporate business.  Current educators, as well as new educators, would find this list useful.  The topics discussed and possible contacts made can improve the teaching experience.

The above list is for Trade and Industrial educators, where I observed the following: QUESTIONS--on critical issues for trade and industrial education, national lists of schools offering tech programs, vocational math skills, and block scheduling. JOB OFFERS--for shop teachers and graduate students asking for jobs. INFORMATION--on electronic surveys, conferences, web sites, list serves, research grants, and studies on Women in Education. OFFERS--on students' e-mail projects in High Schools.

There were many questions posted discussing curriculum and sources of materials. It leaned more toward the Industrial Technology and school-to-work programs then anything else.

Gifted_but_Learning_Disabled
yahoogroups.com/schoolsandeducation/specialeducation
This discussion group focused on issues in education for students who have been identified as gifted potential but also having learning disabilities.  This list is suited for a special education student.  There are several levels of discussion happening but, for the most part, parents are asking for advise on how to deal with their gifted or learing disabled children.  This is a great discussion group for Special Education Teachers or majors.

It focuses on changes and the ability to adopt high performance work practices. Subscribers hope to become more competitive and create and retain high-skill, high-wage jobs for American workers. They target four main areas, workforce education/literacy, technical training, work restructuring, and labor/management.  I hope to be involved in a medium sized business focusing on organizational communication and this list gives a lot of good ideas and is a good networking tool.

Nebraska Business Education (Nebused)http://lists.k12.ne.us/

This discussion group has been established to discuss issues related to Nebraska Business Education.
The majority of the people who are members are educators of the high school level. Some are some from out of state, but the majority are from Nebraska.  This could be useful to students because it gives an idea of what teachers actually discuss.

Manager's Forum
ManagersForum@groups.msn.com
There are currently 442 members in this group which is a place for managers of people to meet, share ideas, strategies, and problems you may have. To join this group all you have to do is click to "join now" and then you will receive emails and discussion from others in the group.  Throughout the month their were over 50 topics on the message board, and I recieved several e-mails covering managerial strategies and problems managers face in the real world.  I recommend this site for management majors, as it is a great source to talk to managers and future managers.

www.hoteljobs.com

This is a website that enables any job seeker in the hotel industry from all over the world to post resumes online (up to three), post messages about jobs, or just to talk to people in the industry.  The site also allows employers to view the site and hire those that posted resumes.  I think this is a great resource for UNI students interested in the hotel industry, but I would not rely on this method for job seeking.

PM Hub
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PMHub
This group  is a great resource for anyone that may be interested in Project Management Certification or Project Management Study.  This group has over 15,000 members and over 21,000 searchable posts averaging over 300 posts a day.  This group’s webpage also provides links to training pages to
prepare to sit for a certification test and full length articles ranging from emotional intelligence to virtual teams to ISO 9000 quality management.  The homepage also has a forum with a “Lessons Learned” section where people that have sat for the certification can post information about the experience.  There is potential to have bulletin board type conversations with people from around the world with the message board having an area for what is called “Water Cooler” talk.  I think that this is a great group and website for anyone that is interested in being a project manager or for anyone that suddenly finds themselves in a situation where they are in charge of a project and would like some additional information about how to handle a situation.

Laborers
http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/laborers/
This  discussion group is for union members, and it allows them to have a  forum to report how their union is functioning in their area.   I chose to become a member of this group because I currently am a new manager in a company that has a union workforce.    There have been some challenging times for me to perform my duties as a manager in a union environment and this has been an opportunity to learn some new information.  I decided that this discussion group would be a great place for me to sit back and try to see what a union is like from the perspective of actually being a member.  Over the past month there has been over 100 posts that have discussed  may different issues.  Many of the posts have been related to the  illegal immigrant issue, and not very relevant to what I was looking  for.  I did however do a little digging through past posts and have  read about some of the issues that union members face.   Overall I do not think that this group is for everyone, but I do think  that I will remain a member of this discussion group at least while I  am a manager in a union environment.

EICoach @www.egroups.com/group/EICoach

This listserv is designed to share the emerging best practices in integrating coaching as a core management role, including effective ways of building skills and measuring impact on individual and organizational performance.

I feel that it would be more useful for business professionals because the emails were from business professionals and they were directed to other business professionals.

EQ Leadership @ www.egroup.com

Some of these e-mails were interesting and talked about leadership and parenting, emotional intelligence, and books, in which current members had read, which made you think about your current life and how it all relates.

Although not very many e-mails were received, I believe this would be a good source for questions relating to leadership and emotional intelligence in the work place as well as in real life.

Prototyping

I am very interested in quality management and production, so I joined a group under business/manufacturing

/prototyping.  This group was very informative, however, it is not very suitable for students looking for help on class work.

However, they may be able to offer great advice if someone is looking to enter the field, or looking for examples of real situations that need to be solved.  If these points interest you, then I recommend joining this group.

Performance Measurement
business@anu.edu.au

This discussion group provided valuable information on how to measure and improve performance levels in a variety of business situations.  Individuals involved in a business or organization asked questions on how to improve productivity in such areas as accounts payable, hospital administration, and warehousing, just to name a few.  Therefore, I would suggest this group to people who really want an advanced look at performance measurement methods.

Quality

The main discussions are about: -TQM startup and practices -information on new programs and degrees at Oklahoma State University -management workshop invitations -helpful hints for surviving in business culture -ISO 9001 information, requirements, and tips-surveys that participants request information for -other management questions and advice. The people that would find this list the most useful would be business professionals, and possibly business students who plan to enter a sector especially focused on quality.  So students planning on going into that would find this listserv very interesting.

I was looking for some information on management that I could use in some my other classes, I received very little information on the topics I was interested in. I would recommend this listserv to anyone interested in business management; maybe I wasn't asking the right questions, or maybe the right people were just not writing back.

This listserv consisted of diverse intellectual writings on various topics relating to organizations, such as fear, creativity, productivity, quality and stress.   Members write in with responses and questions on the material.

The digest’s writings relate to issues that are affecting organizations and society today.   I believe this would be a good source for questions relating to leadership and emotional intelligence in the work place as well as in real life.

Communication

Abbott Letter

This list, sent out once a week by Robert F. Abbott, discusses communication ideas that help you manage effectively. This particular discussion list helps managers, future managers, administrators, and business owners with their communication skills and keeps them up to date with what is going on in the business world.  The most desirable attribute to this discussion list is that anyone can ask a question and the question will be answered by Mr. Abbott, himself, or anyone wanting to answer the question.

I suggest that everyone who is going to be a manager join the discussion and play an active role in it, because there is much to be learned and one will be caught up in the latest communication styles and concepts.

It is a part of the Topica website and can be joined by going to http://www.abbottletter.com and following the simple instructions that are given there. I received a weekly newsletter on topics such as, good listening, better communication, truth and consequences and elevator pitches.

It was a good discussion group but very few people posted questions and none of the ones I sent got answered. This group would probably be more beneficial for someone already in their career.

The articles contained communication scenarios and effective persuasion strategies were explained to deal with them.  I found this information useful because I am going into sales when I graduate.  I think everyone could benefit from these persuasion techniques because they can be used in so many different areas, not just the sales environment.

The purpose of the TFI list serve is to allow professionals and other individuals who are interested in the tourism industry to ask questions, discuss, and receive updates on tourism related issues.

I think the Travel Federation of Iowa list serv would be useful and interesting to students who are interested in a tourism related career.  Particular to those students planning on remaining in Iowa after graduating because the list servs main focus is on issues involving Iowa.  The list serv would be a good way to stay informed on those issues.

PRSSA

The members include individuals who are members of PRSSA or individuals who are interested in joining PRSSA. This listserv is beneficial to me for the fact that I am a member of PRSSA. If I miss a meeting I am still informed as to what is happening. I am informed about any upcoming events, fundraisers, meetings, job opportunities, or committees.

Also if anyone has a question they can just post it on the listserv and someone will answer their question. I would suggest joining this listserv if you are interested in PRSSA or if you are interested for different ideas for your organization on campus.

PRForum or PR & C
Communication/ Academics and Professionals

This list basically consisted of individuals who are currently in a job related to the public relations field. The list usually had information on job openings in the marketing and PR fields. People, usually college students or less inexperienced individuals, would ask questions regarding how to act in interviews, what to put on a resume, and what to look for in a job.

The people on the list that were more experienced would give others tips on what the business world looks for. Every question asked on the list would receive around five answers. I would only recommend this list to a person serious about communicating with other peers in the PR\ Marketing Field.  However I feel that a person serious about this area would benefit from this list.

e-newsletters.internet.com/discussions.html

The discussion list is used by Internet professionals to exchange information about their work.

I think the site is very useful for anyone who wants to learn about the Internet technology.  I received in-depth emails about the Internet as well as links to useful websites related to the Internet technology.  A typical conversation would include hits and tips for software, programming and other Internet related topics.

Recruiter_network-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

The emails that I received pertain mostly to what the description claims.  It also serves as a place for business professionals who are looking for work to place information about themselves for recruiters to find and contact them if they have jobs that fit their needs and requirements.

I think this list would be beneficial to anyone looking to go into some kind of recruitment job.  It is very active (I sometimes received multiple emails a day).  I joined to try and get an idea of what recruiters were looking for and other potential job opportunities.

They also visit coporate headquarters.  Their goal is to familiarize members with as many companies & positions in IT as possible.
This is a very valuable resource for majors in MIS, CIS, and CS.  Members will learn about companies, discover career opportunites, and meet persons in the field who can be valuable contacts in the future.

Yahoogroups
This discussion group offered by American Management and Business Adminsitration Institute online.  Through the discussion group I was able to participate in a wide variety of  business related discussions.  The conversations ranged from management tips and investing news to SARS.
I recommend this group to all business students. The information one can obtain through participation in the group will be infromative and interesting.

Trdev: Yahoogroups
Trdev is a place where training & development issues are discussed in a professional, non-commerical, collegial form.  Most of the people in the discussion group were Directors of training & Development, Consultants and some CEOS/ Presidents.
It is useful for students who are interested in training & development, especially those pursuing the certificate.  It lets students see what is going on in training & development in the real world & then they can make connections to their studies.  HR management and HR developement or training majors might find this site useful.

Human Resources

SHRM
If you are a management major and your emphasis is in Human Resources then I would recommend subscribing to this. For management majors with a different emphasis this website would not be as helpful to you. This website sends you weekly emails to inform you on what the latest events and topics are that will be discussed on the web page. Some of the broad topics that are discussed are HR Essentials, Comp & Benefits, Recruiting & Staffing, Global HR,HR Technology, HR Consulting, HR Outsourcing, HR Measurement, Diversity , Workplace Law . These topics are all things that we learn in our classes and are very relevant to anyone interested in HR. These posts also give you a better idea of what things will be like in the workplace. As far as networking skills this website posts when there are SHRM conferences that students can attend. Although most are located in California and New York making it unlikely that students in Iowa will attend. There are also links available to talk to current employees in the HR field, which I think is very helpful. I know a UNI student who has used this web page to find an internship so it is very possible to find a job and network through this website. I will continue to subscribe to this web page because it has a lot of information that will be helpful upon graduation.
Rachael
Kueter, Spring 2006
Although my major emphasis is in Supply Chain, I am doing an internship this summer in the HR department.  That is why I decided to subscribe to this.
I made 3 posts to this site and two of them were questions.  I had a marvelous response to my posts.  In addition, the website sent me weekly emails informing me of conferences that were being held and other events taking place.   The topics that are covered in this website have many benefits towards UNI students.  They talk about recruiting, which almost every student is excited about.  SHRM also covers things like HR consulting and
technology, all of which we need to know.    I found that subscribing to this electronic network was very beneficial to me.  I learned a lot and am planning on continuing to look at this website after graduation for networking opportunities.
Traci Ollendieck, Spring 2006

I joined the online discussion network, Society for Human
Resource Management Online.  This area of HR does not go along with my
major, but I got the idea to join from a classmate who said this discussion network was a good one to be apart of.   I only posted a couple of times, and got some great answers to my questions.  I also was receiving weekly emails to inform me of new events and happenings in the Society.  They covered many current and relevant topics in the discussions which are great for college students entering the business world.   I found that the SHRM discussion board was a great way to get started using an electronic discussion.  I am now looking for another site that fits in with more of my intersts.
Tyler Cowman, Spring 2006
I have considerable experience in this field and the website was able to maintain my interest because of the many issues it encompasses.  For example the vast issues in employee relations, performance management, training and development of employees, benefits, and progressive discipline and worker’s compensation; not to exclude keeping up with the legal regulations and compliance.  I recommend this site for those interested in the human resources field or being an entrepreneur to give you a greater understanding of the many issues that occur in a business week or month.  This site has a reduced membership for students and well worth the money to begin networking in this professional career group.
Lori Wood, Spring 2006
CTI, Coaching and Training Ideas
Yahoo Groups
This is a discussion group for professionals who are involved in coaching and training in their positions.  I found many informative
posts while in this group.  It is a good resource to find teambuilding activities and ask other experts to help solve the problems or issues
you are facing in your organization. I did not post any comments but I feel that I have learned a lot from what I have read from other's
comments.   There is one down fault to this group though.  This group has a lot of  members that are a little naive and believe every email hoax that they
recieve and proceed to forward it on to all members for the group.   This causes the managers of the group to send out messages to inform others not to do this thus these worthless posts clog up the useful information flow.  I do think that this is a useful group and will continue to be a member so I can use this resource in my future position.  I am very focused on improving myself and others.  I do thnk that this is a great resource for managers to find new training and coaching methods and has a good group of people to ask questions of when you have an issue.

Performance Management and Performance Appraisal
perfmgt-subscribe@egroups.com

The discussion topics pertained to performance improvement on an individual and corporate level. This list can be most helpful to HR majors, because there is a lot of information on evaluation and objective setting for employees.  I have found the information on team performance improvement useful.  The subscibers to this list are mostly professionals in HR, some of them are corporate CEOs. I think that this listerv would be most useful for HR managers, as it can be a large part of their job.  It also would be a good tool for HR majors to use to give them a taste of the real work force.

This egroup is setup to handle various questions about Human Resources.  The description of this egroup identified interaction among members, information sharing, opinion building, query handling, and networking as the primary focus of the discussions.

I feel this egroup can be useful to every student, especially the HR majors.  I feel that this group is a very active group that has a high potential for gaining information to valuable questions.

The members of this listserv are mainly professionals interested in discussing evaluating training and development.

But, students can also find this listserv useful for researching for classroom activities.  For example, a group of students from Santa Clara, California sent a questionnaire asking the management professional members of this listserv their opinions of using employee attitude surveys.

I would recommend subscribing to this discussion group because most of the discussions are about topics regarding training and HR.  Some of the discussion topics included personality tests during hiring, intercultural communication, compensation issues, employees relations and various other HR trends.

This list is sent in a digest format that you must convert to messages.  This list also posted available jobs around the world.  These jobs required at least 5-6 years experience in most cases.  I think that this discussion group is great for HR professionals with substantial experience.  Not for entry level employees.

There were 106 members, although many of them were not active in the discussion.  I received about five emails per day while in this group.   There were a variety of topics covered in this
discussion group.

Overall, this discussion group did not increase my knowledge of the human resources field.  Group members asked questions, but the responses usually weren't posted to the group, they were sent directly to the person who asked the question.  I would suggest this group to people who are already established in the human resources field.

This is a discussion group that discusses issues faced by HR professionals.  I have received messages sharing informaion about the Family and Medical Leave Act, time off, and resume writing hints.  Also worth mentioning is that each week experts review issues in the HR field in the HR Pros chatroom.

I joined this discussion group after hearing a friend comment about its content.  This group has been useful to me as an HR major.  I believe it would be of great benefit to people that are entering and presently in the HR field.

I thought it would be an excellent opportunity to gain "real world" knowledge about issues in Human Resources.  From the messages I received, the group is comprised of HR professionals and students.  Postings to this discussion group included TCM's HR Careers (a nationwide job databank for HR jobs), students asking for advice on HR issues, tips about the costs of training, and wisdom on the practice of documentation.

One aspect of the discussion group that did impress me was professionals' responses to students' questions. As an HR student I feel this list is good to join if you are interested in HR and are looking for advice on HR issues.  This lists purpose is to talk about items related to the Human Resources field and the Training and Development Field. I found this list to be very helpful. They gave me ideas on where to find jobs in the Training field and what classes to take for Human Resources. These people are professional business people, so they are good contacts to have. Because they are professional, the list does require you to follow e-mail etiquette and be professional about what you talk about. I also received daily e-mails of job postings in the HR field, so that was awesome!

If you are interested in Human Resources or Training and Development, I would suggest joining this discussion list.  You will find valuable answers to your questions and maybe even get a job!

This discussion group had some emails that related to topics around team building, resume critiques, current legal topics, and creative motivation techniques.  The res of the emails were too complex to understand without workplace exposure: complex computer issues, evaluating performance apprasial, and executive issues.  Overall, it is fairly usefull.

This discussion group was for Human Resource Managers.  Most of the discussions were about training and changing management in the HR field.  Some other topics included what to look for when hiring, how to communicate with people from different ethnicities, different problems with employee relations, & compensation packages like 401K's and pension plans.
The discussion is not useful for UNI students. It is helpful to professionals in the HR-field with 5-6 years of experience.  It is not helpful for an entry-level HR manager since most of the chatting was from one HR professional to another.  It is a good discussion group, but it is a little difficult to understand how to join the discussions.

Project Management Forum
http://www.pmforum.org.
It is a very informative resource for students who have to work with teams alot. This website sends email on the latest respond to your topic or to a topic that you participated in. It is very easy to register and to become a part of any of the discussions. It has very useful forms such as job posting
forum, case studies, managing projects ect… I participated in the managing projects discussion board since IT personnels require a lot of team work. There were different subject discussed in the project management forum the most important and informative I thought were program management,
project management time, project managers needed for NASA study, managing projects, lessons learned.  Some of these topics were covered in the class discussions. They also give good ideas of what kind of problems will be facing in the real workplace. It is also a good resource for job search and job posting and sharing information about different companies that you would like to work for. I found this discussion board to be very informative and
useful so I will continue to participate in the Pmforum discussion center even after graduation.

Utter Access Discussion Forum
http://www.utteraccess.com/.
You must register to be able to post.  Registering is free and simple, you provide your name, e-mail address, and create a screen name.  This forum has over 1800 members from over  20 countries, posting 100-200 times a day.  Much of this forum is used as a reference for code and other aspects of  Microsoft Access.  During my time as a member I utilized many forum  topics such as queries, forms, reports, security, general question and answer.  What I liked most about this forum was the ability to post a specific question and any relevant information and receive an answer from an expert, who would continue to help me until the problem was solved. While I have found this website to be incredibly helpful, it does not provide much, if any networking opportunities.  It basically serves as a question and answer forum, with tutorials, links, and examples.  I personally have found this site to be helpful in my current position with John Deere.  I have learned a lot, and will continue to be a member of this forum. I would recommend this site for any MIS or CS student looking to get some additional help with Access, or looking to bestow their knowledge onto other people.

Careers in Information Systems Discussion List
CIS-L@yahoo.com
CIS-L is a Web conference board. It is maintained by Merrick School of Business, University of Baltimore. Many of the discussions were about career trends, curriculum, and placement issues. People bring their problems to the discussion group and the problems are remedied by the group.

I have enjoyed learning from this listserv. I plan to stay registered to learn more in my field.

TechRepublic

This discussion group is great for anyone interested in any sort of information technology field.  It covers all aspects including networking , hardware, software, and careers.  Users have the option to recieve various letters regarding all aspects of IT.  You can even compare many of the top programming languages, software packages, and hardware.  In the discussion center you can participate in any discussion that interests you.  I participated in the Careers discussion as well as the Certification discussion.  Topics range from advice for security issues to current networking concerns.  I believe this discussion group is good for anyone with an IT degree, anyone wants to work with computers in other fields, or anyone who thinks they will have to work with computers in their file but feels they need to learn a little about IT.  TechRepublic has a little of everything for beginners to experts.

This discussion group is a forum for both professional and general use.  They claim themselves as a "Technical Work Forum for Computer Professionals."  Their discussion area is broken down into categories by industry, such as software, hardware, and enterprise solutions.  The pride themselves on being  a real-world no-response site dedicated to professional technical disussions.  The web forum is free of commerical and recruiter spam mail, which helps the site to be more professional.  This site has a lot to offer to anyone that wants to be informed or share in current, real discussions regarding multiple technological industries.  I recommend this checking out this site if you are interested.

MIS class discussion list
Topics discussed are pertaining to decision support systems (DSS) and all the topics that go along with them, such as types of DSS and links to other DSS sites, which is a useful tool to anyone interested in that type of system.  Using this posting forum, each student can communicate to the other students regarding the class topics and materials. Students can also ask general questions and anyone can answer, including the instructor. It also teaches each student that WebCt is a powerful tool that when used correctly, can be beneficial to all students who subscribe.

Since I am a MIS major I looked to join a list serve that would relate to technology and business. CedarLug stands for Cedar Valley Linux Users Group which was originally started right here in Cedar Falls.  It's primary focus is to relay information and answer any questions about the free operating system called Linux.  I find that the subscribers to the list to be very knowledgeable and helpful.  If  you have a question, someone else probably knows the answer, and they usually respond pretty quickly.  All in all, this list is geared more towards the 'teckies' like me, who like to play with their computers, and like to use an operating system other than Microsoft Windows.   However, I would recommend this list to any individual wishing explore the possibilities of an alternative operating system.

Cyber Marketing Message Board
This website marketing forum posts questions by online marketing businesses and offers assistance to help other businesses in need.  In the past month, 44 posts of new questions and responses were made.  The most popular topic on the message board is, how to make money fast.  From many of its members, the board has acquired a long list of advice regarding this topic; unfortunately, I had nothing to offer.  Initially I was interested with many of the topics on the Marketing message board, but soon found out that the benefit pertained to those in the marketing field of business.  The potential for networking is great for business students interested in marketing who are either graduating or who have recently graduated.  If you are looking for a chance to communicate and network with other business students outside of UNI, then I wouldn't suggest this discussion for you.  I intend to keep my account with this board even after graduation because I think the advice will be useful at some point in my career.

Subjects for discussion suggested by ISP are effective marketing campaigns, sales and promotional strategies, and successful advertising campaigns. Upon joining this list, be prepared to receive at least twenty-five emails per day as this list is very active.

I found this discussion list to be confusing at times because I am not familiar with all of the terms and specific examples from the business world that were discussed. This discussion group focused mostly on training and steps to take to start your online business.  Some other topics included maintaining honesty and integrity in an online business.
This discussion group is useful for entrepreneurs interested in starting an online business.  However, this group is not useful for people looking to "get rich quick."

Willson Unlimited
The purpose is to exchange ideas and thoughts concerning Global Marketing communication.
It is not useful for a student. The list is suppose to be a marketing listserv, but the fact is that you don't recieve anything that is relevant to your education.  Instead the aim of the list is to get people to invest money in different kinds of projects.

Food Service Professionals
I joined the discussion group for people in the restaurant business. The purpose of this list was to help
professionals in the restaurant business run a smoother and more productive company. They have everything from recipe ideas to different marketing strategies for your company. There is also the chance to ask questions to the list and receive answers within the next few days. I found this list under topica.com and then went under the food and beverage option and looked until I found one that interested me. I found that this list was more for the already established business owner and not for the average college student. So I probably wouldn't recommend this to students but would to the established business owner.--Ryan Bennett

Restaurant Discussion Group
The discussion group I joined had to do with restaurant news: AARestaurant_News@onelist.com.  The group mainly talked about equipment, supplies, and anything to do with restaurant business. Usually about once a week, I received 3 messages within one e-mail  discussing the different things listed above. To join a group on onelist.com, use the search feature on  http://www.onelist.com to find the topic group you are interested in.  Then  fill out some basic information: e-mail address, password, date of birth,  gender and zip code. This site would be useful to a UNI student if they wanted to pursue a  restaurant career.  This discussion group does not overload your mailbox with messages.  The group talks about topics you would not think restaurants would have to worry about, but they do.  An example of this are fire extinguishers. --Lisa Glander

Chapman-Hall is a publishing company that specializes in the field of nutrition and food science, which is my major. They mostly talked about new items being published, particularly those in the area of product development. --Julie Miller

Celiac Sprue
I joined a listserv about a disease called Celiac Sprue. Celiac disease is a hypersensitivity to gluten which is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats. The only way to control this disease is by a strict, life long change of your diet. This is incredibly difficult since most foods we eat contain gluten. The listserv provides new medical information, recipes, answers to questions for new celiacs, and information concerning food products that are gluten free. Members include people with this disease, people with family and friends with this disease. This is a very active listserv with many members. Since celiac is a fairly new disease it is a great means of receiving important information about it. I would highly recommend joining if you have family members with celiac or if you are a celiac. --Debbie Eggleston

Fit-L
The subscribers are from many different career areas with a large minority in fitness-related careers (Exercise/Diet/Wellness). This listserv is conversational. Usually someone would ask a question, and other subscribers would request more and more clarification. This could be somewhat intimidating, however, it was just in an effort to provide an accurate suggestion. The questions would often develop into discussions and debates. Eventually one of the "experts" would step in and give his or her suggestion and the topic would be dropped. I would recommend Fit-L to anyone looking for health tips and ideas. Compared to the other listservs mentioned, the volume was pretty low -- about 15 messages a day. This listserv is pretty laid-back and informative. I've enjoyed it and I think I'm going to continue my subscription. --Molly Skahill

Aerobics and Fitness (www.listserver@aerobics-list.com)
The purpose of this discussion is to ask professional physical fitness people questions about what is healthy and what exercises or diet is good for you to be healthy.  This is useful for a students's health.  Anything else dealing with school, I would say no unless their major is in nutrion or health.  Physical fitness majors may find this site useful, but it is basically just for people who want to get or stay healthy and strong. --anonymous

Law/Business Law

(net-lawyers@peach.ease.lsoft.com)
This listserve targets lawyers, law students, law professors and even prospective and current law students.  The goal of the listserve is to provide an opportunity for these individuals to discuss issues in the law field, as well as how the Internet is connected with the study of law.  For the two months I was subscribed to this listserve I only received two emails
both discussing the use of the Internet in private law firms.  This listserve was not helpful to me, however I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in law or is currently in this profession. --Katie Metcalf

The purpose of this listserv is to allow lawyers, law students, prospective law students, legal assistants, law professors, librarians, and other interested persons to discuss how to use the Internet in connection with the study, practice, and  development of the law.  I was a subscriber to net-lawyers for over two months and I  received only two emails. Those two emails consisted of a topic regarding illegal Internet usage at a certain law firm. I did not find this listserv useful and I would only recommend it to attorneys who have an emphasis in Internet Law. --Tara DeRocher

(atty-list@mail.muni.com)
I joined a listserv that was for municipal law attorneys or other people interested in this type of law. The listserv shared messages about current legal events dealing with municipal law. Attorneys could share any information that they had with attorneys across the country. New municipal laws were often a topic of discussion. Attorneys would often give their own interpretation of these new laws. Unless a person is very interested in this exact field, I would not recommend joining it. I received very little information through this listserv. It seemed that this listserv was almost too specialized. If you are a business person and you want to know about what is going on in the legal world of business, better alternatives exist than this listserv. Other listservs about law are available on the web. I would recommend that they check those listservs out first. --Judson Poppen

Event Planning/Management

Event Resources
http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/eventresources
This group is described as "a discussion group and resource list for professional speakers, meeting planners, speaker's bureaus and event vendors."  The description went on to say that potential topics would include event planning, public speaking, marketing yourself, etc.  As I am interested in a career in the event planning field (particularly in the concert industry), I felt that this group may provide some useful information.
However, after being a part of this discussion group for over a month, I would not necessarily recommend it.  Up until the end of January, the group had a problem with spam and most of the postings were about personal dating sites or other random topics.  This problem was taken care of at the end of January when a moderator took control and stopped allowing spam to be posted.  While that was an improvement, eliminating the spam highlighted the lack of substantial messages.  There were only 4 postings in March and 3 in February.  While one of these seven postings did actually speak to my interests in the entertainment industry, I feel that I wasn't able to learn much of anything from this discussion group. After my experience with this group over the past month, I would not recommend joining to get information about event planning.  The group description sounds great, but they don't back up that description with actual information on the subjects they mentioned.  Now that there is a moderator, this group may have the potential to improve in the future, but they haven't shown any signs of growth yet.

rsvpplanning.  (www.onelist.com)
It is a resource on event planning tips for all types of events. I found this groups on. It took me a little while to find what group I wanted to be part of.   This site is not very useful. It doesn't have very many members and it is relatively new. I didn't get too many emails and when I did, the information wasn't helpful. I wouldn't suggest this site to any UNI student who is considering a career in event planning. It was not very useful to me.   --Nicole Tunning

I joined a discussion forum on the Special Events Site web page.  The site and discussion group is dedicated to the industry of special events.  The majority of the discussion participants were professionals in the field of special events.  The purpose of the site is to offer support, suggestions, advice and direction to event planners and other professionals within this field.  It also reports on the new trends and breakthroughs in the industry. I found the list to be very beneficial.  I am interested in this industry so the contacts I made and the information that was provided to me was very practical and relevant.  I received information on companies within the industry, what employeers look for in entry-level employees and other suggestions from those who now.  I think this website is beneficial to those who are also interested in special events.  It is a site that is specific in its content.  I do not think other UNI students would find this discussion group interesting or relevant without some interest in the industry.  --Kara Austrum

Consulting

(Bu Consulting@Onelist.com)
It was Boston University, School of Management, Consulting Club and it brings students together to explore and understand the world of consulting better, even before it becomes
a part of their life. "We share and learn together in order to help others share and learn." I immediately recieved a letter letting me know I was accepted to the group of 25 members and then for the next two months I recieved two advertisement emails. That's all I ever got from them. I was quite disappointed in this group and do not recommend it for anyone. --Laura Perfater

Resume Office (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/resumeoffice)
The purpose of this discussion group is to recieve helpfu tips and advice that will help one get the job, promotion, and career he/she is looking for.  There are tools that help you prepared an effective resume.  I think this listserv could be very helpful to students.  It gives helpful tips that you can use in creating a effective resume, without being overloaded with messages.  The tips are only sent weekly, which is very nice since I already get a ton of spam.  However, no one really asked a question or joined in on discussions, so these aren't a lot of "real world" experience applications.  This useful for all majors and professionsls.
--Britne Haskin

Career Division Network (www.aom.pace.edu)
The purpose is to address people's life long success of work experiences, the structure of opportunity, to work and the relationship between careers, and other aspects of life.  The largest portion of memebers are educators (50%) and the second largest group is students (30%).  This list serv is not useful to students because the majority of the posts are about professor position openings or available training classes.  College professors would find this site interesting.  --Catherine Gitch

Sports Management

SPORTMGT (www.topica.com)
The list was about sports management. This was for current managers and also students or others who were interested in the field.  You then have to sen a confirmation email to make sure that everything worked out right when suscribing. I was a member of this list for 3 weeks and got only three or four emails. I was very disappointed in the list because I thought it was going to be a lot of telling about the profession and how to get involved. As a result, I would not recommend subscribing to this list because you may be disappointed. However, I did find that topica.com had a lot of discussion lists that I may like to subscribe to in the future.

Music

Velvet Rope
www.velvetrope.com
This site is very relevant if you are interested in a career in the music industry. If you are not interested in music, this discussion group would have very little relevance to you. There are several hundred posts a day, but they are all sub-grouped into categories such as general music , tv-music, music managers, jobs, etc... I primarily participated in the general music discussion and the music manager discussion. In the general discussion many useful topics are covered such as upcoming releases, general status of labels and the industry news. You do sometimes have to ignore the latest brittney spears and puff daddy gossip. Other than that the Velvet Rope is full of useful information.   There is a potential networking opportunity as most of the "characters" on the board are very open about who they are and their jobs. I have met several people who potentially could be useful in the future. I even had a specific question about music publishing and "private messaged" a person I knew worked at ASCAP. I have since had several email conversations with him and he has been very helpful. Overall this is a very useful site if you are interested in the music
industry.

Review of Lists Archives

More HRNET.....
This e-mail discussion group shares issues related to research and the practice of Human Resources Management.  HRNET is one of the most popular, if not the most popular, listserve to join for those involved in Human Resources.  Since it's birth in 1993, this group has received recognition from the Academy of Management. With its 5000+ members, it is not uncommon to receive as many as 60+ e-mails a day!!!!!  I found this group to be very useful to me and for business communication purposes in general.  I base this on the sincere responses I received from questions I posted.  These responses were from 20+ HR professional around the world.  These HR professionals did not care that I was only an HR
student.  I was not treated differently because of this, and was reassured that I had every right to be an active participant in the group.  As a result, I have made a few networking contacts who have requested I contact them after graduation regarding employment opportunities.   This listserve would be useful for all HR professionals and any HR students.  The issues discussed will cover topics such as employment law, the future of HR, trends in HR, leadership, career development, compensation, training, safety, employee relations, HR job openings, and general advice.  --Barb Baedke

HRNET is a highly active listserv, I received approximately 45 messages per day.  I would not recommend subscribing to this listserv unless you have a seperate e-mail account.  Other than that, HRNET would be an excellent way of gaining knowledge about Human Resource issues, and learning more about the carrer itself.  This listserve provides a wide range of topics including, compensation issues, interviewing strategies, company sponsored day cares, and discrimination in the workplace.  I would suggest this listserv to students interested in Human Resources, HR professionals, or entry-level employees in the HR field wanting advice on HR issues. --Anne Ubben

This listserv would be great for Human Resource Management majors and those getting a certificate in training and development.  The topics discussed include, interviewing, compensation and benefits, leadership, harassment and many other issues.  This listserve is very active.  Expect quite a few messages from people very interested in the field of Human Resources.  --Jennifer Cole

I found this listserv very interesting and informative because of my interest in the field.  I plan to subscribe to a similar listserv once I enter the profession.  HRNET was comprised of over 5000 members.  The members were mostly HR professionals, but college students and professors also contributed to the discussions.  Some of the topics discussed included: harassment and workplace violence, employee recruiting and screening, leadership, training programs, discrimination, and various employee relation problems.  Other members would give their opinions to various questions that were asked.  At times there was a lot of controversy over topics of discussion, but I always learned something.  I would highly recommend this discussion group to anyone with a management major and especially to students with an interest in Human Resources.   I usually received about 40-50 messages a day, so at times that became a bit overwhelming.  If you have the time to read all the messages, it is definitely worth your time.  --Heather Veldhuizen

Over 4,000 individuals subscribed to HRNET.  These people were mostly Human Resource Professionals, however, it was not unusual to hear from HR Grad Students, and Professors.  The information that was communicated through this email group was very informative.  Some of the common topics discussed included: training programs, liability in the work
environment, discrimination, work ethics, recruiting, policies, procedures, and office language.  Many subscribers would use this listserv as a resource by asking other professionals their opinions on various work-related topics.  Other members would volunteer information to group members, such as a summary or notes from a conference he/she recently attended.  I would definitely recommend this email group to all students, but especially those studying Management and Communications.  It is not unusual to receive 30-40 messages a day, but
do not get discouraged, because the information exchanged is very useful.  --Patty Clark

This serve was obviously directed to professionals in the Human Resource field or people who have interests in the area. It was used as a resource for people to ask questions about human resource issues to other professionals as well discussing everyday work items that one would see in the office. Some issues included: ethics, policies, discrimination, and various training programs. I would recommend this site to anyone in a management major with a human resources emphasis or any other major which involves a lot of communication or training with individuals or groups. People in workforce should also consider this page if they are in the above metioned areas. --Dale Otte

This would be great for any HR professionals or students to learn about the profession and to ask questions. The professionals mainly wrote to the listserv with questions ranging from sexual harassment to job opportunities. The readers would then reply back with their opinions. This is a good way to learn about how HR professionals feel about certain topics and law. This listserv would be highly effective for new professionals entering HR. It is a good place where you can get your questions answered by other trained and experienced professionals. There is one problem with joining this listserv. I was receiving around 50 messages a day. If you are interested in joining HRNet I highly recommend having it digested to one day a week. --Angela Scheetz

As some other classmates have mentioned this is a great listserv, but it is quite active. I received over 50 messages in one day. This listserv covers a wide variety of topics related to Human Resources. The majority of the messages are from people, many grad students, requesting professionals knowledge. The thing that makes this list so active is that everyone's replies are posted to the list as well. The only set communication rule of this list is that no commercials are allowed. This list definitely doesn't follow the one page rule because many messages I received were quite long. I don't mean to be negative if I had a lot of extra time on my hands Icould learn a great deal by reading these messages. --Chris Magee

This is a very active listserv, as of Feb. 1996 they had 2,600 members worldwide. I often got 200-400 messages every 4-6 days. The information discussed on this list had to with various aspects of Human Resources. I say lots of requests for advice, where to find books and studies, and job openings. The "ground rules" sent to me in my welcoming message included, use a descriptive header when posting, as well as an introductory sentence or two at the beginning of the message so readers know what it's about. Also, if you post a question, they ask that you keep track of the answers and provide a summary to the network later. I found some of these summaries so it appears the members do follow the ground rules. As for mechanics, I saw only one emoticon, a smiley face =) and the signatures varied from no name to name, title, address, fax and home numbers. Two suggestions if joining this listserv, follow the directions you receive in the welcoming message to do keyword searches, also don't read your messages one by one, type "dir" and look at the subject headings. This will save much time and help you find whatever interests you. -Karen Sheeks

…an excellent listserv for those who are interested in the Human Resource occupation. The topics discussed varied, some examples include; HR terminology, employment law issues, and staffing techniques. The most beneficial subjects that would apply to students were announcements of job openings and proper techniques to preparing a resume. Most messages were fairly lengthy. The "one-page" rule was definitely not followed in most cases. A majority of the messages were requesting information and followed a simple pattern of what they were asking and how to respond back. Every once in a while someone would reply to the listserv answering a specific question, but either the question was not restated or a fair amount of time had past since the question was asked because it was difficult to understand what that person was replying to? Overall, the listserv has provided valuable information as to what issues HR personnel are faced with. I highly recommend any HR Management major to subscribe. This listserv provides an eye-opener to "real world" situations. --Steph Beebe

It was very informative for those who wish to go into the field of Human Resource Management. The only problem with this listserv is it has grown so much, making it difficult to keep up with all of the mail. Surveys were frequently posted and a variety of issues were brought up. Some common issues that were discussed were Health Care, workplace politics, sexual harassment, and discriminatory activity. Questions were also asked about using the WWW for recruiting and on-line hiring. New technology seemed to be a hot issue on this listserv. The messages that I felt were the most beneficial included information about resumes, interviews, and employee recruiting. These topics might be interesting and helpful for college students. Overall, I would not suggest subscribing to the HR Listserv unless you have hours to spend reading your e-mail. The number of messages I received daily was overwhelming. --Sara Anderson

Topics on this listserv included such things as compensation, incentive plans, job postings, and questions on specific policies and procedures. The listserv was very informative. The HR professionals seemed to benefit from the advice and conversations on the listserv. For student, the listserv is very helpful in finding out what a HR professional will confront in their daily jobs. However, you receive over 50 messages a day from the listserv. It is somewhat time-consuming to weed through all the messages. I would recommend this listserv to anyone interested in the Human Resource field. --Valerie Vos

The listserv that I joined was a good listserv for Human Resource Management students. This was a very busy listserv, so if you have a lot of time on your hands and want to spend hour upon hour reading your mail, join this listserv. The people on this listserv conducted many surveys, tabulated the results, and then posted the results they found. There was a wide span of topics they discussed, a few being sexual harassment, discrimination in the workplace, and health care benefits that are offered by different employers compared to what other employees actually receive. The topics I found most useful to me as a student dealt with interviewing techniques and employee recruiting/on-line hiring. These topics were topics that I could relate to as a student. If you love to get mail, then I suggest subscribing to this list, if you don't then you might want to find another. --Jamie Harms

More learning-org-digest...
I found this listserv very informing for business and non-business majors.  The listserv discussed a variety of issues like employee  creativity, communication via listservs, team building games and more personal issues like what is love.  One thing that interested me was in the team building games.  Someone suggested the game "Win as Much as You Can."  I have played this game in two of my management classes.  It is reassuring to know that we are being taught tools that are actually used in the workplace.  I definitely recommend that students check out this listserv. --Kelly Bockenstedt

This listserv was beneficial to all business majors even though I went in to it with a desire for marketing discussion. We discussed some topics we have discussed in class like group, team and committee communication and project management. The discussions pertained to my place of employment as we are talking about more efficient ways to do business and creating good business relationships.  I would recommend the group to anyone who doesn't want a ton of emails and would like to discuss a wide array of topics.  It is beneficial to all
majors, not only business majors.  --Rachelle Ries

This discussion group is nice in that you only get a summary of what has been stated that particular day.  The conversation features a variety of topics, including building learning organizations, determining what makes a good university, and situations where business ethics are involved. Learning Organization would be a good group for any business of
communication major to join, however, there are probably more specific groups out there that may be more suited to a particular major.  Desite the fact that you only get a couple of messages a day from this group, it is still time-consuming to sort through everything to find information that is relevant to a certain major. --Wes Games

This listserv is for people in all levels of business.  Some topics have been things like what makes a good university, the difference between teams and committees, and even Einstein's statement about how if you try to pick something up in the universe you find that everything else is attached to it.   I would recommend this listserv to all majors. The topics are open to all points of view.  It was also nice to not get a bunch of emails a day from this listserv.  Instead, I just got two emails a day that were a composite of the discussions. This listserv is useful because it helps us know what type of discussions are acceptable in a business setting and what we should expect.     --Jill McCall

This listserv is one in which people at all levels, individually and collectively, are continually increasing their capacity to produce results they really care about. The dialogue is mostly
about building learning organizations. Some of the topics that this group has been discussing is what makes an excellent university, what the difference is between a team and a committee, project management, linear thinking, and they have been discussing a business coach training program. For the last month the topics have been really interesting and I have
especially enjoyed the topic of the difference between teams and committees. This discussion group would be great for all business and communication majors, and any other major. The topics discussed would benefit these majors in the workplace and they would also gather some ideas on what business professionals are discussing in their organizations.  I would also
recommend subscribing to the digest(as shown above) instead of getting about 25 messages a day. The digest is a daily compilation of Learning-org messages, with a simple table of contents at the top. It is a great list serve to join! --Lori Schany

The goal of this listserv is to conduct a dialogue about building learning organizations.  A learning organization is based on the concept of Peter M. Senge in his book, _The Fifth Discipline_.  He wants everyone, in groups and by themselves to always increase what they know, what they do, and what they care about.  Most of the people on the list appear to be consultants, but all are interested in increasing their knowledge.  Some of the topics discussed were virtual universities, other interesting listservs, employee creativity, boundry-less organizations, what is love, and linear thinking.   10-30 messages will be recieved per day.  Another option exists for this list.  This is to receive a daily digest.  This is a summary of the daily messages.  I think that most people would find this discussion interesting, but some of the topics require additional reading or knowledge in order to understand and participate in the discussion.  For example, one topic was entropy and it was difficult to understand this topic and the books that were being discussed about it.  I think this would not be the best list for college students because sometimes the topics were not interesting.  I think think this is due to my lack of knowledge on some of the topics.  One of the best things about this listserv is that the host reviews each message before they are sent on.  He assigns the topic a number that must be used submitting a comment.  Also, it is recommended that the exact phrase be forwarded along with the response.  This makes the discussion easier to follow.  In addition, if the message does not adhere to the standards of the list the message is returned to the author so it can be edited before it is put on the list.  It is interesting and people who want to expand their horizons should try this listserv out.   --Nicole D. Kathman

This dicussion group mainly discused learning organizations and what it takes to create a well managed business.  This discussion group had came from a list that other students
had used in this same class.  I thought this discussion was very informing and I actually enjoyed reading my emails.  I learned a lot and would say that this discussion group is good for all majors and I suggest you join it.  --Danielle Allen

This list was very beneficial to me.  Since I am a General Studies major, I wasn't looking for a business specific list serve.  This list serve discussed topics that are relevant to everyday business experiences, such as team building, team skills, communication skills, and other discussions which other people have already mentioned.  I think that this list serve would benefit many people.  It was good for me.  I also think communication and business majors would also enjoy it.  --Teresa Kurtenbach

The information is somewhat useful involving communication but at an in  depth level.  I think other list servs would be better for our knowledge.  --Barry O'Neill

This group discusses many businesses topics that I feel could be useful to a  variety of people.  Because this group is not aimed toward one specific  business area, the topics are relevant to many different types of  organizations.  I believe that most individuals could apply at least some  topics from this group to their current work place.  Some of these topics
may inlude building teamwork, understanding different communication styles,  and comparing office codes of conduct.  Therefore, I would recommend this group for all majors. Most of us will be  involved in some sort of organization one day and the discussions in this  group could be very helpful and applicable.  I would also recommend this  group because as busy college students, we do not have time to sort through  tons of email messages. --Melissa Lyon

Sorry this is late, but all the e-mail I received from the listserv filled my disk. So I have been cut off from communication for awhile. I joined a listserv learning-org@world.std.COM.
