Cross-Cultural Communication

    Welcome to Europe--Hungary

Acceptable Public Behavior

  • Hungarians enjoy their “personal space,” and can behave as reserved and formal.

  • Customary greeting: a handshake upon arrival and departure.

  • Polite for man to wait for a woman to extend her hand; some men will kiss a woman’s hand when introduced ; friends may greet with a kiss on the cheek.

Business Attire

  • Women: suits or conservative dresses

  • Men: suits and ties

  • In general: fairly casually dressed people

Conversations and Networking

  • Exchange of business cards: make sure your card is printed in your language as well as Hungarian.

Meetings, Presentations, and Negotiation Tactics

  • Request essential meetings in writing well in advance.

  • In Taiwan, it is assumed the first person who enters the room is the head of the group. Important guests are usually escorted to their seats.

  • Many business managers do not speak English, often a Hungarian interpreter is provided.

  • Presentations should be precise and thorough.

Dinner Etiquette

  • Luncheons, receptions and dinners are usual settings of business entertaining.

  • Meals are for socializing, not discussing business.

  • Eat at continental style, with fork remaining in left hand at all times.
