Professional Skills Initiative

UNIBusiness grads stand out from the competition in a variety of ways.

  • They know their stuff. Our alumni attribute their early career success to a rock-solid foundation – something we call within the College "essential business knowledge."

  • They let their homegrown values guide their actions. Our alumni distinguish themselves by their homegrown values of hard work, integrity, humility, and personal responsibility – traditional work values.

  • They project professional confidence and skill. UNIBusiness alumni learned soon after graduation that success requires assertiveness, confidence, adaptability, tolerance for ambiguity, critical thinking, communication skills, and proper professional etiquette – contemporary professional skills.

Our faculty’s reputation for teaching excellence provides the first quality of this functional blend. We have found that our students’ background, while the source of strong work values, may frequently provide inadequate professional exposure. To leverage our two most valuable strengths and ensure that our graduates hit the ground running as professionals, UNIBusiness alumni and friends are helping our students acquire the contemporary professional skills they need to be fully competitive.

We encourage you to learn more about PSI and to join the next group of students committed to developing their contemporary professional skills through this program, which is unique to UNIBusiness.

What is PSI?
PSI is a skill-building program that you participate in outside of class. PSI offers workshops, campus events, mentoring from distinguished alumni and other business professionals, study abroad opportunities, and internships.

Who can be part of PSI?
Each fall, sophomores who have declared a major within UNIBusiness are invited to apply. The first 80 qualified students who respond are selected and enter the program with an orientation session offered each January. Once you’re admitted into the program, you’re part of PSI for your entire undergraduate experience.

What do PSI students do?
First, you must attend the PSI orientation in January. From there, you’ll participate in one PSI activity per week. For example, you may attend a workshop on how to make a good first impression or attend an etiquette dinner to learn social graces. The next week you might meet and talk with CEOs via webcast or meet area business leaders and learn how to be a stronger, more persuasive leader.

How much time does PSI require?
On average, no more than one hour each week. A variety of PSI activities are offered during spring and fall semester, so you can choose which ones you want to participate in.

What are the benefits of being involved?
You’ll “graduate” from PSI with a portfolio of professional development activities that you completed during the program and receive a Professional Skills Certification. This is a valuable credential to have since it shows prospective employers you’re a skilled professional who is ready and eager to contribute. When you combine what you’ve learned in PSI with the technical knowledge gained in class and your positive work values, you’ll have a competitive edge in the marketplace.

Who do I contact to learn more?
Email PSI Program Administrator Ronelle Langley or her assistant, UNIBusiness student David Miller.
