Elaine Roy came to us from Keystone, Iowa hoping to have a great personal experience
while building the foundation for a valuable personal and professional life after college.
She chose an Accounting major and soon began to put her growing knowledge into practice
with an internship at Taylor Veterinary Hospital.
Hundreds of businesses, government
agencies, nonprofits and others
count on UNIBusiness to develop students like Elaine, helping them compete in
today’s demanding global market. Parents, grandparents, high school teachers, neighbors,
taxpayers, and many others have a big stake in the young people who come to UNI. Our intent is to help our students
fulfill the expectations of these institutions and people.

Our Mission
UNIBusiness aspires to excellence as measured by exemplary achievement in the three customary dimensions of university performance: teaching (educational intent), research (research intent) and service (outreach and service intent).
Educational Intent
UNIBusiness provides a demanding education to students from Iowa and around the world. Our graduates’ distinctive advantage resides in the unique blend of qualities they offer: essential business knowledge, contemporary professional skills, and traditional work values. Our educational intent is to develop graduates who are prepared to meet the global leadership challenges of the 21st century.
Research Intent
Continuous learning, professional development and meaningful research produce the intellectual growth required for UNIBusiness faculty members to serve our students, community, and professional constituencies. Our primary responsibility as scholars is to advance disciplinary knowledge. At the same time, our pursuit of teaching excellence and our commitment to serving the business community provide opportunities for research and publication in both pedagogy and practice. Our research intent is to create increasingly rigorous scholarship resulting in appropriately-reviewed journal articles, books and other intellectually significant contributions.
Outreach/Service Intent
UNIBusiness provides intellectual leadership to the academic community and also serves the needs of communities and businesses in Iowa and beyond, while offering experiential learning and entrepreneurship opportunities. Our service intent is to employ the intellectual strength, practical knowledge, and business expertise of faculty members, professional staff, and students to enhance academic and managerial productivity while stimulating economic growth in Iowa.
Continuous Renewal
Of course, to succeed in our mission, we hire good teacher/scholars; we provide a
comfortable, efficient learning environment; and we expect a lot of our students and of
ourselves. Those are essential ingredients in preparing our students. More is required,
however. UNIBusiness faculty members, administrators and staff must have a clear picture of
where we are going. We must all be “on the same page,” as the saying goes, and that page
must provide a broad blueprint for a productive UNIBusiness that fully challenges and rewards
all of our students. Every great American business carefully invests time and resources in
identifying its strengths and weaknesses, better serving its markets, generating plans for
growth, and mapping its short-and long-term future. UNIBusiness does the same in a collaborative
process of constant review and renewal as seen through our strategic planning
and learning assurance processes.
