UNI partners with community colleges for Brazil FIPSE grant

UNI Management professor

UNIBusiness students will now have a unique opportunity to spend a semester studying abroad in Brazil starting Fall, 2010. UNI partnered with Hawkeye Community College and Kirkwood Community College to obtain a Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE grant).

The four year FIPSE grant will allow the three Iowa schools to work hand-in-hand with Universidade Federal De Goiás and the Universidade de Brasília, the two partner Brazilian universities. Grant coordinators will be working together to arrange the curriculum, establish a consortium known as the Iowa-Brazil Exchange on Business and Agriculture, and set criteria for the students and faculty who wish to take part in the exchange program.

Starting Fall, 2010, eight students from each of the Iowa schools will receive a $4,000 mobility stipend for travel and tuition and a $1,000 language stipend. In addition to the 24 students that will be going to Brazil to study, 24 students from Brazil will travel to Iowa to study at the participating schools. Faculty will also participate in the exchange program and be given a great opportunity to conduct research projects.

The overall vision for the FIPSE grant is to provide the foundation for long-term, productive relations between Iowan and Brazilian partners and accomplish the shared goal of expanding international education opportunities for students early in their academic careers. The focus areas of this project are to enhance curriculum, implement student and faculty exchanges, adopt technology-based distance learning, and establish practicum opportunities with businesses in both Iowa and Brazil.

Following the completion of the four year FIPSE grant, the partnering universities aim to have a self-sufficient exchange program, allowing UNIBusiness students as well as the partnering universities' students to have this great opportunity for years to come.
