On October 17, 2009, students from more than 100 colleges and universities participated in the eighth annual Deloitte Tax Case Study Competition. UNIBusiness sent four Master of Accounting students, Kacy Fahrmann, Joe Pudenz, Michelle Stone, and Ryan Yeager, to Davenport, Iowa to compete in this competition. Faculty adviser, Marty Wartick also traveled with the group.

The competition took place at 23 regional sites across the country. In order to compete in this event, the university or college must receive an invitation from the Deloitte Foundation. Participating students were selected by the accounting faculty. The Tax Case Study Competition features two divisions, graduate and undergraduate. At each level, teams of four have five hours to complete a case study that requires the competitors to analyze information, identify issues and alternative tax treatments, and come up with a solution that cites the Internal Revenue Code and Treasury Regulations. At the end of the competition, each team prepares a written solution of their case and submits it to a panel of judges from Deloitte Tax LLP for evaluation.

Each year we leverage the Deloitte Tax Case Study Competition to encourage and inspire the next generation of tax leaders by exposing students to scenarios that they would encounter in current business environments,” said Shaun Budnik, President of The Deloitte Foundation and partner of Deloitte LLP. “Additionally, this event is designed to help participants enhance their ability to work in teams and grow the fundamental business skills required for professionals to thrive.”

The competition was hosted by the Deloitte Foundation which is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1928 that supports teaching, research, and curriculum innovation in accounting, business, and related fields in the U.S.
