Josh Mahoney finalist for nation's best scholar-athlete, "Academic Heisman"
University of Northern Iowa senior linebacker Josh Mahoney (Economics/English) has been selected by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) as a member of the 2009 National Scholar-Athlete class. The 16 members of this year's class are finalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy, which recognizes the best scholar-athlete in the nation.
The NFF's National Scholar-Athlete program was launched in 1959 and awards scholar-athletes with post-graduate scholarships for their athletic, academic and leadership abilities and accomplishments. Each finalist will receive an $18,000 scholarship, and one finalist will be the winner of the William V. Campbell Trophy and a $25,000 post-graduate scholarship.
"To be among the 16 finalists for the William V. Campbell trophy is a tremendous honor and I feel very privileged to have an opportunity to be listed alongside some of the other impressive student-athletes in the nation," Mahoney said.
Mahoney, a native of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was a First Team All-Missouri Valley Conference player in 2008 after ranking third in the conference in tackles per game and leading the Panthers to the FCS semifinals. Mahoney has been a letter-winner three times for the Panthers and has 186 career tackles.
Mahoney's academic accomplishments include being recognized on the Dean's List every semester while at Northern Iowa. He has won the UNI undergraduate English Major Essay Contest three times and has been a member of the Missouri Valley Conference All-Academic Team twice. In 2008, he was named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American and selected to the FCS Academic All-Star Team.
Mahoney has also been a three-year participant in the NCAA "Just Read" program, a four-year member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and a seminar leader for the Iowa Character Counts Program. To add to his impressive resume as a scholar-athlete, Mahoney serves as co-president of the UNI Pre-Law club and is an active volunteer. He has dedicated time to help with the Special Olympics and flood and tornado relief after the devastating storms in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
