Global Associates event features Moroccan and Algerian culture

Hicham Zemmahi
On Wednesday, October 16, approximately 50 students took the opportunity to experience North African culture. The Global Associates and the International Club of Business Students joined together to organize a presentation focused on North African culture.

Hicham Zemmahi, a UNI graduate student, shared a presentation on his home country, Morocco. After the presentation students were able to acquire a variety of items to taste. Frederique Boudouani also presented on his native Algeria. Boudouani, co-owner of Sheras restaurant in Elkader, Iowa, explained his unique path to northeast Iowa and his restaurant passion.  Boudouani shared that Cedar Rapids was the site of the first Islam mosque in the United States and Elkader is named after an Algerian that was a hero in history.

Following the presentations, Hassan Atarmal (Finance), president of Global Associates, presented mugs to the speakers. The mugs had University of Northern Iowa printed on them in many languages.

Global Associates is organized by the International Club of Business Students. The organization hosts international students at social events, and has a semester field trip to various metro areas to visit companies involved in international operations. The student group also promotes international diversity through the sale of t-shirts with University of Northern Iowa in 17 languages printed on them.

The Global Associates Program is financially supported by the Bill Kimball International Relations Endowed Fund. For more information on ICBS visit www.uni.edu/studentorgs/icbs or stop by CBB 261.
