Overseas Program Leads to International Career

With her future in mind, Emily Barrick (Business Concepts ’06) decided to take advantage of an international internship in Dalian, China. As a dual major in Spanish and Portuguese, Emily thought a minor in business concepts would help her to land a an international business job. With the FAW internship, that’s certainly what she found.

“In my opinion, if you want to be successful in the international business world, you not only need language skills that are directly related to the job, but also the ability to talk about things unrelated to work. This goes hand-in-hand with understanding the culture of a different country.”

Emily experienced many cultures while in college. Taking advantage of any program that would allow her to travel overseas, Emily was able to study and live in Japan, Spain, Portugal, Cuba and China.

With her business concepts minor, Emily gained knowledge about basic business fundamentals while simultaneously diversifying her portfolio with her foreign language majors. This extensive portfolio gave her the opportunity to land a job with the Hewlett-Packard team in Dalian, China, as a Training Project Manager.

“I’m looking forward to the unique skills and knowledge this experience will bring to allow me to compete in today’s global marketplace. I’m also considering furthering my education with a master’s in international business.”

Indeed, Emily has already used her education from UNIBusiness to analyze and adapt to China’s business environment as an intern with First Automobile Works (FAW), an International Logistics division in Dalian, China. She feels she was better able to understand Chinese business implications because of the cross-cultural communications she learned at UNI before going overseas.

Emily found it extremely important to expose herself to different cultures by living overseas. “Without doing so, I would have never been able to witness firsthand the different thought processes and widely varying business practices that these countries have.”

Truly, Emily’s desires have been within reach. She has obtained valuable experience and has been given the opportunity to achieve her goals. With courage and determination she was able to seize these opportunities and strive to make a difference in the international business world.

“It’s not always easy to be so far away from your home and family, but I strongly agree with something that Albert Einstein once said: ‘In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.’”
