Accounting: More Than Numbers

Jeff Provost (Accounting ’84) continues to follow the wisdom he gained from UNI professors in his career. He passes along that wisdom, as well, as he mentors new employees and contributes to curriculum development for UNI’s accounting program.

Looking back on his time as an accounting major, Jeff recalls the values of Dr. Darrel Davis, as well as his availability to students, that made him such a good role model for accounting majors. One of the most important lessons was to put life in perspective.

“I learned from Dr. Davis that the business of life is not business, but living,” Jeff said.

Jeff uses this mindset as the Office Managing Partner at the Kansas City office of Deloitte & Touche, LLP. His responsibilities include overall client service satisfaction, overall revenue growth in the Kansas City marketplace, and ensuring that the Deloitte Brand is recognizable and visible within that market.

Since starting with the firm in 1984, Jeff has enjoyed the ability to work with energetic and talented people. His position gives him opportunities to mentor and coach new employees just beginning their careers and feels great satisfaction when they succeed with the firm.

Jeff has also given back to UNI as a past member of the UNI Accounting Advisory Council. Jeff has provided suggestions for accounting program improvements, taking advantage of this opportunity alumni have to help current and future students meet the demands of today’s business world.

“The most formal way alumni affect the development of the program is by serving on the Accounting Advisory Council,” says Marty Wartick, UNI accounting department head. “This group provides advice and insight into issues that the department faces.”

In addition, accounting alumni often interact with current students through accounting club activities and other events. Many professors have stayed in touch with alumni, providing another avenue for input from alumni.

Through Dr. Davis' example, Jeff developed a sense of balance and stability, knowing that seemingly large problems are often insignificant in the grand scope of life. He appreciates the flexible schedule his job provides, which allows him to balance working many hours with family commitments. He and his wife Teresa have two children, who are his inspiration.
