Support for professional development in finance reaches a new milestone
Teaching Innovation Award
Mir Zaman, G. Carl Schweser Financial Analysis Professor, is responsible for two innovative and remarkably successful programs in the College,
the Krause Investment Challenge and the CFA Study Seminar.
The Krause Challenge began when Kum & Go co-founder and CEO Mr. Bill Krause gave $25,000 to each of four Iowa universities -- UNI, Iowa, Iowa State, and Drake -- to give students "real world" investing experience. Several UNIBusiness students give up their Friday afternoons to manage this portfolio, and the College teams won the Krause Challenge trophy twice in the first four years of the program.
The CFA Study Seminar has been instrumental in jumpstarting the careers of finance majors. Student attendees, regularly 15 to 20, give up their Saturdays and part of their Spring Break to prepare to earn the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) designation, the most respected credential for finance professionals. These students have passed the CFA® Examination at a rate twice the global average. Dr. Zaman received the College's Teaching Innovation Award in recognition of his demanding strategy to teach CFA® material and keep his finance students motivated through all those Friday afternoons and Saturdays.
