Dean’s Fund for Excellence Supports Students in Competition

Jack Welch, former CEO of G.E. said, “An organization's ability to learn, and translate that learning into action rapidly, is the ultimate competitive advantage.” One could say the same is true of individuals. The Dean’s Fund for Excellence allows UNIBusiness students to quickly translate their education into action by supporting student involvement in national and international business competitions:
  • The UNI chapter of Pi Sigma Epsilon (PSE) participated in the 50th annual national conference in Minneapolis, taking first place and edging out other top-caliber business school teams in the BOSS games, a marketing simulation.
  • Four students pursuing double majors in finance and real estate won the 2005 University Challenge of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties, Minnesota Chapter.
  • UNI's International Club of Business Students (ICBS) placed fifth out of more than sixty business schools in the championship round of the International Business Case Competition in Rennes, France.
  • The UNI SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) team was selected USA Regional Champion from among 30 schools participating in the regional SIFE competition.
These challenging opportunities can help elevate a satisfactory education to the exemplary level that sets the foundation for a life of accomplishment. Communication and interpersonal skills along with personal initiative, capacities often highly prized by the corporate community, are among the qualities tested and strengthened by the demands of academic competition. The College of Business Administration is proud to offer these opportunities to our undergraduates as additional preparation for their entry to the workforce.

James W. Mulick, a May 2006 graduate in Real Estate and Finance, valued his competition experience:

“Participating in the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP) competition was both challenging and exciting. It is such a great feeling when you make that connection between a classroom concept and a business-world situation.”

Megan S. Meyer, an investment analyst for Principal Real Estate Investors and a graduate of Real Estate and Finance, agrees that linking her education to real world situations has made all the difference in her professional career:

“Participating in student competitions set into motion the skills I was learning about in the classroom. Too many times I caught myself wondering, ‘When am I going to use this information?’ Competitions helped answer the question because I utilized so many ideas I had learned in class when strategizing a plan for them.”

The Dean’s Fund for Excellence makes these experiences happen by providing the financial support for student groups participating in regional, national, and international competitions. The Dean's Fund helps pay for registration, travel, hotel and meals, while the student clubs also pay a portion of the expenses. Your support of the Dean's Fund for Excellence helps ensure that UNIBusiness graduates will continue to distinguish themselves in Iowa and beyond.
