Alumni recognize teaching excellence in accounting

Inaugural Gaylon Halverson Professors

At the 2003 Spring Recognition Gala, the successful efforts to establish the Gaylon Halverson Professorship were celebrated. The inaugural recipients of the fully-funded, endowed professorship were: Ronald Abraham, Halverson Professor in Teaching Excellence; Laverne Andreessen, Halverson Professor in Accounting Education; Darrel Davis, Halverson Professor in Teaching Excellence; and Lee Nicholas, Halverson Professor in Accounting Education.

Ronald Abraham, Halverson Professor in Teaching Excellence, Spring 2005

Ronald Abraham earned a B.B.A. degree (1970) and MBA (1971) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Abraham began his accounting career at Ernst & Young in 1971 as an office coordinator for computerized audits and later as a senior accountant-audit staff.  He has taught accounting at UNI since 1974.

Laverne Andreessen, Halverson Professor in Accounting Education, Spring 2004

Laverne Andreessen earned a B.A. degree (1961) from the University of Northern Iowa as a business education major with an accounting emphasis. He began teaching at West Delaware Community School in 1961 and returned to UNI for an M.A. (1966). Andreessen served as a staff accountant with Price Waterhouse & Co. in 1967 and for Dee Gosling and Company in 1969.  Thereafter he was employed as a controller for Hutchison, Inc. He has been an assistant accounting professor at UNI since 1980.

Darrel Davis, Halverson Professor in Teaching Excellence, Fall 2003

Darrel Davis earned an M.A. degree (1969) and a B.A. (1965) from UNI.  Thereafter, he worked at Price Waterhouse & Co. and served as a battalion operations NCO for the United States Army in Europe.  Returning to academics, Davis received his Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University in 1975.  Having taught at Oklahoma State University and the University of Texas, Professor Davis returned to UNI in 1975 as an Assistant Professor of Accounting.

Lee Nicholas, Halverson Professor in Accounting Education, Fall 2004

Lee Nicholas received a B.S. degree from the University of Kansas in 1962 and an M.B.A. in 1970 from the University of Tulsa. Nicholas’ earned valuable professional experience at The Skelly Oil Company in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he worked as a natural gas accounting supervisor, corporate reporting and analysis supervisor and corporate tax accountant. He started his teaching career at Tulsa Junior College and came to UNI as an assistant professor of accounting in 1974.
