International Competition

In sports, an athlete's preparation is challenged each time he or she competes. UNI College of Business Administration students have the same opportunity to test intellectual strengths as well as their writing and presentation skills. In addition, these competitions often provide opportunities to travel to a different country to compete against teams from all over the world.

Operation Stimulus Transportation Forum

The University of Northern Iowa participated for the first time in this supply chain competition in January 2009. The Denver Transportation Club, in association the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver, are sponsors of the annual Forum held in January of each year. Prior to the event a case is given to competing teams, each of which has one week to develop a strategy and Power Point presentation for the case. Teams present their conclusions in a 45-minute presentation and Q&A session in front of judges.

Because the forum is part of a much larger conference, students have the opportunity to attend a trade show, hear presentations by knowledgeable speakers, and network with logistics and supply chain executives from all over the world. Interested students should contact Chris Schrage.

National Intercollegiate Mediation Tournament

With short-notice and belonging to no formal organization, several UNIBusiness students advanced to the National Intercollegiate Mediation Tournament in 2008 where they secured the title of National Mediation Runner-Up Champions qualifying for the international tournament. Motivated by their success at nationals, the UNIBusiness participants decided to create a new student organization that would make it easier for interested UNI students to compete in future mediation tournaments. Through UNI Society for Dispute Resolution, the newly formed organization, students can participate in this and other mediation tournaments.

Dispute resolution is a rapidly developing field that explores effective alternatives to formal litigation. Mediation is among the most common methods in dispute resolution, as are arbitration and negotiation. These methods can be used in a variety of management situations to prevent and resolve conflict, promote business relationships, and avoid the costs of litigation. For more information on UNI Society for Dispute Resolution and participation in this and other mediation tournaments, interested students should contact Pernell Cezar.
