2. Business Classrooms/Labs

File Rescue

The CBA now has a "disk rescue" software program available at the Lab Monitor station in the Blanford Lab (CBB 236) and in the Info Tech Office (CBB 216). The BadCopy Pro program can recover damaged files in many (sorry, not all) cases, so the next time you get that dreaded "Error Reading Drive X" message, bring your disk or CD to one of those locations and see if we can help.

CBB 113
48 student NOVA* stations plus instructor station. Windows XP, CBANET and Internet access, networked HP LaserJet printer, ceiling mounted Sharp projector and Elmo presenter. This room is regularly scheduled for computer intensive classes, but a few time slots are available for occasional use. (See Section 3 for reservation process.)

CBB 224
35 student NOVA* stations plus instructor station. Windows XP, CBANET and Internet access, networked HP LaserJet printer, ceiling mounted Sharp projector and Elmo presenter. This room is available to schedule for classes on a regular or occasional basis subject to availability. Students may use CBB 224 as an unmonitored lab during regular work hours when not in use for classes. The regular schedule is available here and each week's schedule is posted on the door.

CBB 236
The Blanford Lab [CLOSED OVER THE SUMMER] contains 39 student stations plus instructor/assistant station, Windows XP, CBANET and Internet access, networked HP LaserJet printer and a color scanner station. Open lab hours are held as posted and are intended primarily for CBA students requiring software that is NOT available in ITS (Public) Student Computing Centers. Lab hours begin the second week of classes and end the week before finals. Available for regular and occasional use during only a few non-lab hours. The schedule is posted on the door and here.

* NOVA workstations are the type in which the monitor and computer are mounted below the desktop, providing a flat work surface and unobstructed view.

CBB 238
Information Systems Research Lab (ISRL). This room, containing eight special-purpose computers, is not a classroom. The ISRL supports student and faculty research or development projects needing specialized resources not available elsewhere on campus. The ISRL also houses a collection of computer-related periodicals and reference materials.

For additional information, contact the lab director, Shashi Kaparthi (273-2958).

CBB 226
This room may be used by faculty and student employees doing CBA work assignments only. CBB 226 is NOT a student lab. Students found to be using CBB 226 for personal or class work (including printing) will be asked to leave and not return.

Classrooms
All regular CBA classrooms are equipped with a multimedia cabinet containing a Windows-based computer, a VCR/DVD player, an Elmo presenter and a wireless mouse. All of the equipment is connected to an LCD projector suspended from the ceiling. Sound for the computers and VCRs is transmitted through the overhead projectors. Please do NOT install any software on the classroom computers! Even simple software can affect the operation of these systems. Contact the Info Tech office to arrange installation of anything needed in classes. (See Software Resources in section 4 below). A brief training on the equipment is required before checking out a multimedia cabinet key - available by calling the Info Tech office. See our Key Policy for details.

Iowa Communcations Network (ICN) Room
CBB 122 is a fully equipped ICN room. The ICN room is available through ICN Scheduling (x37740), and training is offered through ITS-Training (x32309). The multimedia equipment in this room varies a little from the normal CBA classroom, so first-time users might want to request a brief orientation session. CBB 122 functions as a "regular" classroom when not in ICN use.

3. Check Out and Reservation Process

A. Reserving Rooms

1. Please note that the Info Tech office schedules only CBB 113, 224 and 236. To reserve any other classroom, contact the Scheduling Office (x32110); Conference rooms 323 and 319 are reserved through the CBA Dean's Office (x36240) but equipment requests should be directed to the Info Tech Office.
2. CBA courses that require computer use at every class require scheduling priority. CBA faculty should refer to the Faculty Resources (http://www.cba.uni.edu/intranet/) link for information on reserving a computer classroom on a regular basis. After the class schedule for the semester is established, the remaining free times in those computer facilities are available for classes or other university activities.
3. One time or "occasional" reservations for a computer classroom are made on a "first come, first served" basis. Contact the Info Tech Office (x37969) to reserve a time for your class. Obviously, your chances of getting the date and time you need are better if you reserve well ahead of time! By the first day of classes, very limited times are available.

B. Laptops and peripherals
1. Various laptop computers, digital cameras, and portable zip drives are available to CBA faculty or students for short periods of time (the general guideline is two weeks). Examples of appropriate use include off-campus presentations, business trips, or student athletes who may be "on the road" for a significant time period.
2. The user is required to sign a check out form accepting full responsibility for the equipment - including the cost of any repairs or replacement due to damage.
3. Academic breaks are the times of heaviest demand - reserve early for those periods!
4. The checkout period is typically one or two weeks. This equipment is not intended for long term loans.
5. Equipment checkout, including reservations, is handled in the Info Tech Office, CBB 216, (x37969).
6. For more information, see our Equipment Policy.

C. Using Multimedia Equipment
Reservations for regular classrooms at other than regularly-scheduled class times must be made through the University Scheduling Office (x32110). To use the multimedia equipment in any CBB classroom, you will need to obtain a cabinet key. Before the key is issued to you, you will meet with one of our staff for a brief orientation on how to use the various items. Please see our Key Policy for details.

5. Network Storage

A private folder on the CBA network (accessible only from on campus) can be requested by CBA students or groups for semester-long projects. Stop in CBB 216, email cbatech@uni.edu, or call (x37969) our office to make arrangements.

A"public" folder on the network, found in G:\LAB\TEMP, can be used to store presentations or large files temporarily (until you buy a Zip disk or give your presentation the next day, e.g.) This folder is deleted weekly on Friday afternoons so be sure you are finished with it or have copied it by the end of the week! Remember: The folder is open to the public so your file should have a unique, identifiable name. Security is not guaranteed.

6. Mainframe Computing, E-mail, Off-Campus Access

For information about UNI's Mainframe software (including e-mail), setting up home computers and access to UNI resources from off campus, please contact campus Information Technology Services (ITS).
