The Charles T. Leavitt Scholarship originated in
1970 from memorials for the late Charles T.
Leavitt, professor of history and economics at UNI.
It is awarded each year to an undergraduate student
majoring in economics.
Dr. Leavitt was on the faculty at UNI for 23 years
starting in 1946. He attained his BA degree from
Beloit College and an MA and PhD degree from the
University of Chicago.
A Cedar Falls native, Leavitt taught at high schools
in Eagle Grove and Westfield, Iowa, Wausau,
Wisconsin and at Dakota Wesleyan University in
Mitchell, South Dakota, Clarion Teachers College
in Clarion, Pennsylvania and the Milwaukee
Vocational School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin before
returning to Cedar Falls in 1946 to teach at UNI.
Dr. Leavitt was a member of Phi Beta Kappa,
American Historical Association, Mississippi
Valley Historical Association, American Economic
Association, Midwest Economic Association, and
Pi Gamma Mu. He was a member of the Cedar
Falls Rotary Club and served a term as president.
He was a life-long member of the Congregational
Church and frequently served in an official capacity
for the church. Until his death in 1970, Dr. Leavitt
contributed much of his free time to the
betterment of the community in which he lived.
Full-time Economics majors who will be seniors in the fall semester are eligible to apply for this scholarship. |
