Maurice A. Van Nostrand Scholarship

The Maurice A. Van Nostrand Economics Scholarship was established in honor of Maurice Van Nostrand by his wife, Carol, and his son, Jamie. The scholarship is awarded annually to deserving students in economics.

Maurice A. Van Nostrand (1925-1991) was Chairman of the Iowa Commerce Commission (now the Iowa Utilities Board) from 1971 to 1979. Prior to his appointment to the commission, he served three terms in the Iowa legislature representing Pottawattamie County. While serving on the Commission, he was the energy advisor to popular four-term governor Robert D. Ray. Van Nostrand became a lay expert on energy issues without the benefit of any formal training or college courses in economics. He was instrumental in guiding Iowa through the first of a series of energy crises.

Maurice Van Nostrand died in 1991.

Full-time Economics majors who will be seniors in the fall semester are eligible to apply for this scholarship.
